Rice crisis looms — Abono
Farmers and agriculture stakeholders have warned of a “looming rice crisis” as they called for a “shake-up” in the leadership of the Bureau of Customs for failing to curb the entry of smuggled grains into the country.
“Heads should roll for the failure of Customs to address the problem of rampant smuggling in the Visayas and Mindanao. Smuggled rice have flooded the market, reaching Nueva Ecija, Baguio, Pangasinan, La Union and even Isabela, the rice granary of the Philippines,” Abono Party-list chairman Rosendo So said, in an interview. With the upcoming proclamation rallies set in Cebu for UNA and in Manila for the Liberal Party, Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile has called on his fellow senatorial candidates to be passionate about the platforms and their qualifications instead of trying to bring others down. “Perhaps we the candidates can show the world that elections in this side of the world can be both clean and civil. Let us, the national candidates, set the example,” he said.
EDITORIAL: FOI in ICU: A Call for Rescue
THE Freedom of Information (FOI) Bill is on the throes of death.
With just six session days left before the House of Representatives adjourns for the May 2013 election campaign, one and only one miracle could save it from certain perdition — a certification on the urgency of its immediate enactment by President Aquino himself. (more…)
CORTEZ: Calimlim kontra droga

Hehehe.
Bakit kaya may sticker ng OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES ang SUV ni Siman?

‘Bangus King’ of Dagupan
By Yolanda Sotelo
DAGUPAN CITY – If there’s someone who deserves to be called “bangus king” in this city, it could be Eduardo Maramba, 58, who belongs to four generations of bangus growers.
“My greatfather Franciso, my grandfather Cipriano and my father Rufino were all engaged in bangus culture, but it is only during my time when the industry blossomed into its present state,” Maramba, who owns eight hectares of fishponds in the city, five hectares in Alaminos City, and 12 fish cages also in Alaminos.
Maramba, who is accredited by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ilocos regional office as a fish grower, saw how the industry grew since he was 12 u old when he used to help his father in the fishpond.
“We culture only few bangus then, only one fish in every square meter. The fish also were given solely lablab (a kind of filamentous algae) so they grew faster. From fingerlings, it took only 45-60 days then to grow bangus to 300 grams each,” he recalled. (more…)
Victor Agbayani takes time out from active politics
By Yolanda Sotelo
DAGUPAN CITY – Former Pangasinan Governor Victor Agbayani announced that he was taking a “time out” from politics as he is now concentrating on family life, marketing his new book and recently completing a research for the United Nations Aid for International Development.
Agbayani, a three-term governor of Pangasinan, said he was offered positions in the national government but he declined as “these are offices where I may not have impact especially on Pangasinan.”
He said he was promoting his book Battlegrounds and Breakthroughs: Progress for Rural Development, a documentation of his programs and projects when he was governor.
“We have also just completed a three-month project with the USAID on the evaluation of the health programs on the country,” he said. (more…)
