Urdaneta City — Mayor Amadeo R. Perez Jr. has disclosed here that the 11th City Charter Day Celebration on March 19-22, 2009 will be simple due to the economic and financial crisis the country is facing today.

“We cannot afford to have lavish celebration now because of economic meltdown and even the city government is aware of the impending financial crisis,” Perez told a media group that paid him a visit during the 43rd Founding Anniversary of the Urdaneta City University.

He said that on March 19, there will be a mass wedding; on the 20th the Grand Finals of the Amateur Singing Contest; on the 21st a grand parade with field demonstrations, drum and lyre competition and street dancing. In the evening will be the coronation of Little Mr. and Ms. Urdaneta City.

“Our priorities for this year are anchored on food production, social services, health and education,” Perez said.

In food production, the city has propagated 40,000 malunggay seedlings to be distributed to 200 public schools and barangays on top of the gulayan program, where vegetable seeds were provided to the barangays.

On health, he said that the city had just opened the 3rd rural health unit in Barangay Labit Proper to cater to the continuous medical consultations and the delivery of primary health services to the city’s constituents.

He said that the Urdaneta City University had just completed its gymnasium with complete facilities out of the funds of the city government. He said that the university is self-liquidating with a surplus funds of P24 million which will be used to construct modern facilities of the school.
