ROSALES- “ It’s safe to eat pork and processed pork products from Pangasinan. There’s no outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF).”

This was said by  Agriculture Secretary William Dar during his visit to the province on December 1 to attend the Urdaneta City’s fiesta and the lechon (roasted pig) festival in Rosales town.

Recall that  hogs from the towns of Mapandan and Bayambang particularly in Baloling and Apalen villages, respectively, earlier tested positive for ASF. However, the Department of Agriculture   (DA), worked   with the local government units and other government agencies  to prevent further spread of the ASF virus.

Some towns also issued resolutions and executive orders for the total ban of hogs and pork products in Pangasinan.

“We have enough supply of pork  this Christmas season. Our hog raisers have over production since only one percent of the total hog population in the country is affected by ASF. The hog industry is a PHP260-billion industry, and everybody must work together to protect it,” Dar said.

He said that the threat is still there and  quarantine system has to be improved including the implementation and observance of the 1-7-10 protocol.

Under the 1-7-10 protocol, Dar said  the government culls all pigs within the one-kilometer radius of the affected farm, while the movement of pork and pork products within seven kilometers is limited. It also conducts surveillance and monitoring within the 10-kilometer radius.

He also said that the provinces of Bulacan and Pampanga were the most devastated by ASF, and monitoring in those provinces was enhanced to prevent the spread of the virus.

Dar commended the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (Sinag) particularly the National Hog Raisers Association (NHRA) for coordinating and helping DA address the problem on ASF.

“Ang hiling natin sa mga hog raisers especially the hog traders, huwag na kayong bumili ng mga baboy na may sakit (I ask the hog raisers especially the hog traders not to buy hogs that are sick). If you buy ASF-infected hogs and slaughter it, this will spread the virus,” Dar said.

“There are provinces which tightened their guard (at the entry points) because of their negative experience from one processor. There are meat processors who asking help from DA  to trade their processed products to the different provinces,” he said.

A boodle fight of lechon (roasted pig) was conducted in Urdaneta City where Dar was joined by City Mayor Julio “Rammy” Parayno III, Vice Mayor Jing Parayno, members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, officers of the Urdaneta Business Club, 5th District Rep. Ramon Monmon” Guico III, 5th District Board Member Louie Sison, SINAG chairman Rosendo So, and DA Regional Executive Director Lucrecio Alviar Jr.

In this town, he was joined by Abono Partylist Rep. Conrado M. Estrella III, Mayor Susan Pagador-Casareno, Vice Mayor Enrique Cosue Jr. and members of the Sagguniang Bayan.
