DAGUPAN CITYThe Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Pangasinan has reiterated its reminder and alerted the public anew on buying only quality and standard Christmas lights to ensure safe observation of yuletide season.

Guillermo Avelino, Jr., senior trade and industry development specialist of DTI-Pangasinan, said consumers should always take note of the safe features of Christmas lights and to buy only those with valid Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) stickers or Philippine Standard (PS) marks to ensure that the product has been tested to safety.

“Christmas lights are safe to use if it passed the tests on product guide released by the Bureau of Philippine Standards and have conformed to the Philippine National Standards (PNS) 189:2000, prior to its distribution or offering for sale to the market,” Avelino said.

He said to check if the products are reliable and safe, consumers should remember and follow some safety tips of DTI in buying Christmas lights.

First, check if the set of lights has complete parts and functions such as flusher unit, lampholder, lamps or LED, plug, outlet and design frame.

Second, check if the wires of Christmas light sets are well-secured to the lampholders terminal and if the plug has firm pins which could not be easily bent.

Third, check the label if the Christmas lights are categorized for indoor or outdoor use.

Fourth, look for PS and ICC markings. The product label should also indicate the name of manufacturer, supplier or distributor, address, trade mark, rated voltage, rated wattage of the Christmas light set, batch, lot number or bar code, country origin and standard used-PNS-189:2000.

Likewise, Avelino reminded all retailers in the province to sell only products with ICC stickers and PS markings to avoid being penalized with monetary fine of up to P300, 000 and cancellation of any DTI-issued permit or license if found to be possessing and selling substandard sets of Christmas lights.

He also advised the public to report their complaints on defective or substandard sets of Christmas lights at the DTI-Pangasinan Provincial Office located at the 2nd Floor of Star Building, Arellano Street in Dagupan City or call at telephone numbers (075) 551-3183 or 529-6177. (PIA Pangasinan)
