DAGUPAN CITY – The government has allowed a franchise of 30 taxi units in this city to operate here and the entire Region-1.

According to lawyer Leland R. Lopez, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has already released the provisional authority to operate the public utility vehicles.

Dito na rin mag ta- take off and operate iyong first na taxi operator ng entire province of Pangasinan na awardan na rin kanina ng probationary authority to operate. Meron na po silang 10 taxi units owned and operated by the Bonuan Transport Services Corporation,” he said.

Lopez is the counsel of SPD Development & Consultancy that owns the sprawling hundreds of millions of pesos modern Dagupan City Transport Terminal located at the Judge Jose De Venecia Highway Extension at Barangay Tapuac here.

With the provisional authority granted to them, the taxis can operate anytime from now.

He explained the authority means that the franchisee Bonuan Transport Service Corporation (BTSC) should have to meet all the requirements needed by the LTFRB to finalize its franchise. One of them is to add the remaining 20 units of its thirty fleet to operate in the four provinces and nine cities of Region I as part of its contract with the government.

“Kaya nga po provisional iyan kasi sampu pa lang iyong nai deliver sa kanila na fully compliant taxi units in compliance with existing regulation, policies, and publication of the DOTR and saka ng Land Transportation and Franchising Board in relation sa issuance ng kanilang franchise certificate of public convenience to operate that of taxi units any point of Region -1,” he said.

In collaboration with the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program of President Rodrigo Duterte administration, the LTFRB announced the opening of new taxi 75 unit franchises in the four provinces in Region 1.

Recently, the LTFRB Region 1 launched a roadshow here and in Laoag City presenting a number of modernized vehicles which include bus, van, and taxi units along the national highway, which will soon serve commuters in the region.

Regional Director Nasrudin Talipasan of the LTFRB Region 1 said this is the first time that a taxi will operate in the Ilocos Region to improve its public transport system.

Based to the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) vehicle modernization program, the additional taxi franchise is in support of the flagship program of the Duterte Administration which envisions a restructured, modern, well-managed, and environmentally sustainable transport sector where drivers and operators have stable, sufficient and dignified livelihoods while commuters get to their destinations quickly, safely, and comfortably.

According to Director Talipasan, the modernization program is a comprehensive system reform that will entirely change the public land transportation industry.

The last time this burgeoning city had been served by taxis was in the 1950s.

Since 70 years ago this city will again see taxis, although air conditioned, four – wheel public utility cruising at her highways and streets and that of the Ilocos Region.
