MAGANES: Political will

The new officials of the local government units officially started discharging their duties and responsibilities on July 1. It was their first day in their offices leaving behind them the heartaches wrought by the last campaign period. One can see smiles on their faces as they savored their sweet victories. They prepared themselves for the next three years of governance in their localities.

The primary role of the officials is to bring order in their areas and provide the basic services of the people they served. In keeping with peace and order, political will is need to invoke the much needed change or reforms. While many officials are eager to implement these reforms, some or perhaps many of them have no guts to pursue the change they’ve been saying during the election campaign.

There are however local officials who made true on their promises. And it’s inspiring that these officials belong to the younger breed of politicians.

In Manila City, Mayor Francisco “ Isko Moreno” Domagoso did the impossible to the envy of his predecessor former Mayor Joseph Estrada. On his first day of office, he personally supervised the clearing of streets from ambulant vendors in Divisoria that for years have clogged the streets. (more…)
