‘Bobotantes’ hit after nixing ex-judges, docs, lawyers

 By Mortz C. Ortigoza

DAGUPAN CITY – Political spectators bemoaned the loss of former judges, lawyers, and doctors in the last May 13, 2019 election.

One of them was former regional director of the Department of Interior & Local Government Romeo Prangan.

The former executive deplored the myopia of many voters who elected candidates in exchange of twenty to one hundred pesos per voter despite their being intellectually inferior.

LOSS. A former regional director of the Department of Interior & Local Government bemoans how voters squandered the opportunity to elect and exploit the experiences, intellects, and talents of former Municipal Trial Court judges Florante Gabat (left) and Santiago Marcella, Jr. who failed to win their aspired seats in the Sangguniang Bayan (legislature) of Calasiao and San Fabian towns.

Sinag dismayed by ports’ quarantine laxity

By Virgilio Sar. Maganes

ROSALES-  The Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (Sinag) expressed dismay over the lax of quarantine services at the Philippine ports

This could possibly lead to the entry of meat products particularly pork, both frozen and processed, from the countries affected with African Swine Flu (ASF) virus.

Sinag Chairman Rosendo So said 300 kilos of pork affected with ASF have entered Cebu, and which were nearly sold to the market.

“We have been lobbying with the Department of Agriculture (DA) through the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) to install quarantine services in our ports. It’s been ten months or more, but our lobbying settled on deaf ears of our government officials,” he said.

It can be recalled that Sinag has sent several letters to DA particularly Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol to act on the establishment of adequate quarantine areas at the ports to suppress the entry of frozen pork and processed products to the country.

“At first, there was initial action by DA. However, that action was not sustained. When I arrived from Morocco on June 19 at the NAIA Terminal 3, I observed that there were no sniffing dogs, with only one sign board and the quarantine carpet (foot bath) was dry. That alone will show how lax our government is in implementing a very important policy to save our hog industry,” So said.

Recall also that in January last year, Piñol has relieved the whole quarantine team at NAIA and instructed then Acting Director of BAI  Ronnie Domingo “to ensure that foot baths and other quarantine measures are established in all entry points of the country.

The dreaded ASF is a disease killing pigs in at least eight countries was reported to already be spreading in China.

So also suggested that quarantine should be done at the first border, not at the second border.

“First border is the checking of the frozen pork and processed products in port of entry, not in consignees’ warehouse or cold storage. Consignees’ warehouses or cold storages are the second borders,” So said.

MAGANES: Coping with the lean months

The onset of the rainy season brings hope to the farmers. They can now prepare their farms for the planting season especially in areas that could not be reached by irrigation services. The planting of palay has just started. It could be seen that farmers now are more attuned to the new technologies. They are using mechanized farming activities sans the employment of farm workers. The cost of farm mechanization is cheaper as compared to employing farm workers with a daily wage of P500.

vir

There is also the dark side of full farm mechanization. Farm workers will have no sources of income. They will be idle in their means of livelihood, thus most of them look for other sources of income like becoming construction workers, tricycle drivers or doing menial work. Such is the sorry state of our labor force particularly those who have no other skills to boast of.

Well, the planting season is also the lean period. This is the time when farm activities consumed most of the money of the farmers. If they have additional incomes, these are spent on basic needs like food, education of their children, house maintenance, etc. (more…)
