Aguilar kapitan faces electioneering charge

LINGAYEN – A barangay kapitan of Aguilar town faces a complaint for for campaigning for a mayoralty candidate and her slate, at the provincial office of the Department of Interior and Local Government.

The letter of complaint, addressed to  Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año, was filed by Janet Abalos on April 16, against Arturo Sanchez Posadas Sr., barangay chairman of Bocboc East, Aguilar town.

DILG Provincial Officer Randy dela Rosa said the complaint was the first to be filed against a barangay official during the present campaign period. He said his office will forward the complaint to the office of Secretary Ano.

The complaint was for violation of Republic Act No. 7160, or the Local Government Code of 1991, the Omnibus Election Code, and section 261 (i) of the Joint Commission on Elections-Civic Service Commission Advisory on Electioneering and Partisan Political Activity.

She claimed that in the morning of April 6, she saw Posadas accompanying mayoralty candidate Betty Ballesteros and her team conducting a house to house campaign in Sitio Sipitan of Bocboc village.

She said the team was playing campaign jingles and she “felt dismayed, disgusted and offended” to see Posadas “unlawfully, illegally, maliciously and wantonly engaged in partisan political activity or electioneering  by openly, actively and aggressively campaigning for and promoting the candidacy of mayoralty candidate Betty Ballesteros and her team.”

Abalos recorded the campaign activities on her mobile phone for the purpose of filing the complaint. She submitted video recordings of the campaign activities that showed Posadas wearing a campaign blazer of the mayoralty candidate.

Two other residents of the village – Orlando Palisoc Jr., and Alfredo Tenorio – also filed their respective affidavits against Posadas, as they also witnessed his campaign activities.

EDITORIAL: Maligayang ika -12 anibersaryo Northern Watch!

(more…)

MAGANES: Political atmosphere in Pangasinan now is different from that of 2016 elections

During the observance of Holy Week, I was able to talk with a group of political observers in the 5th District. In the course of our discussion, the group, which was composed of seven persons, me not included, were one in saying that politics now is different from that of 2016. I asked them why? They said that voters now are more open in giving their support to their candidates, unlike before when voters were more passive in their choices of candidates.

Our talks were more focused on the political situation in the 5th District. They said that Binalonan Mayor and 5th District congressional candidate Ramon “Mon-mon” Guico III will make a run of the money of his rival candidate who is the incumbent congressman of the District. They said that Guico will floor his opponent in nine towns out of 10 towns leaving Bautista the hometown of his rival as a losing ground. This he said is based on their observation as to how the people has been receiving Guico in his various campaign sorties.

One political observer said that Alcala will either be for Guico or his rival, being adjacent to Bautista.  But another said it will be a 50-50 scenario and if Guico’s rival will win there, it will just be by a slim margin. Sto. Tomas town they said will be for Guico owing to his mother who was born and raised in the said town. (more…)
