NBI, BIR haul 20 truckloads of equipment, raw materials

FROM FAKE CIGARETTE FACTORY IN BUGALLON

BUGALLON – The Bureau of Internal Revenue, assisted by the National Bureau Of Investigation, hauled more than 20 truckloads of equipment, fake cigarettes and raw materials from the fake cigarettes factory in Portic, Bugallon; and Malabago, Mangaldan.

Rodolfo Ignacio Jr., executive officer of NBI’s intellectual property rights division, said the hugeness of the production could mean that the fake cigarettes were marketed in the entire country.

He said it was the Philip Morris Fortune Tobacco Corporation which requested assistance from the BIR after it learned about the proliferation of fake cigarettes in the market.

Among the company’s main brands, two were manufactured in the fake cigarette factory – Marlboro and More. The fake cigarette factory also manufactured Winston, Camel and Marvels.

It was learned that some weeks back, the  BIR raided six sari-sari stores in Villa, Sta, Barbara which sold fake cigarettes which could have come from the Portic factory, he said.

The BIR said it would confiscate everything in consonance with existing revenue laws.

The machines and the raw materials and finished products would be brought to a BIR’s warehouse in Porac, Pampanga.

Aside from tax evasion cases, the factory owner also faces violation of intellectual property rights or patent laws, Ignacio said.

The BIR said government could have lost billions of pesos, depending on how long the factory had been operating. Each cigarette pack carries a P35 tax stamp, and the estimate is that daily, the factory churns out 200 boxes of 500 packs each.

A computation would mean that daily, the taxes lost is P3.5 million.

(more…)

The meaning of Christmas

If we were to believe the Christian faith, which is anchored on the Holy Bible, Jesus Christ the son of God was born in a lowly manger in the town of Bethlehem in Palestine more than 2,000 years ago. Born to redeem mankind and save Israel from the shackles of Roman Empire’s slavery, Christ was born as a promise from God to Virgin Mary who conceived Him by the power of Holy Spirit.

The Jews in those days were waiting for their Messiah who to them will have a kingly power from the lineage of King David out of the 12 tribes of Israel. When He was born, angels rejoiced from heaven singing “peace on earth, goodwill to men”. Three wise men from the Orient visited Jesus in Bethlehem and offered Him three gifts: incense, gold and myrrh. His birth, however, was not given much attention by the Jews not until He started His ministry at the age of 30.

During His ministry, Jesus preached the Kingdom of God. He proclaimed Himself as the promised Son of God as prophesied by the prophets of Israel. He talked about peace, love, salvation and the redemption of mankind. He chose His 12 disciples who helped Him in propagating His ministry that continued even after His death at the cross in Golgotha. He was scourged to death when he claimed to be  the Son of God and the Redeemer,  to the consternation of the priests during His time. (more…)
