Celeste announces gubernatorial bid

By Virgilio Sar. Maganes

URDANETA CITY- Alaminos City Mayor Arthur F. Celeste has announced his plan to run for governor of Pangasinan in the May 13, 2019 elections.

Celeste made the announcement on October 6, before the cheering village officials of Binalonan, Villasis and this city at the house of former Urdaneta City Vice Mayor Onofre “Bong” Gorospe.

LOOK UP HIGH Senator Grace Poe and some Pangasinan officials point to the sky – (left to right), Villasis Vice Mayor Jesus Franco “Butch” Sison Jr., Abono Partylist Chair Rosendo O. So, Senator Grace Poe, Darwina Sampang, gubernatorial aspirant Alaminos City Mayor Arthur F. Celeste, Board Member aspirant Louie Sison, former Binalonan Mayor Ramon “Monching” Guico Jr. and the village officials of Villasis, Urdaneta City and Binalonan.

His declaration was during a “Welcome” activity for him, Senator Grace Poe and the Abono Partylist group.

Celeste, who is on his second term as mayor of Alaminos City, said he accepted the challenge from the leaders of Pangasinan to run as governor against the Espinos to effect development change in Pangasinan.

He said the Espinos, referring to Governor Amado “Pogi” Espino III and 5th District Rep. Amado T. Espino Jr., also a former governor of three terms, have ruled the province for 12 years. (more…)

MAGANES: Pangasinan for all!

While political campaigns have not yet officially started, the ingenuity of political camps are in the offing. Slogans and battle cries are coined to attract the attention of the voting populace.

Alaminos City Mayor Arthur F. Celeste who is bent on running for the gubernatorial post in Pangasinan has his “Pangasinan Para sa Lahat” (Pangasinan for All)- a statement that reflects inclusivity among the Pangasinenses. Inclusivity encompasses all people regardless of social situation-rich, poor, professionals, farmers, laborers, persons with disabilities, LGBTs, etc. It is suggestive of total infusion of social classes that nobody will be left behind in terms of development programs.

During an event in Urdaneta City where village officials of Binalonan, Villasis and Urdaneta City welcomed the visit of Abono Partylist Chair Rosendo O. So, Mayor Art Celeste and Senator Grace Poe, I was given a baseball cap with the marks on it- “We love Arth Celeste, We love Pangasinan”. I like the word “We” as opposed to “I” that is also reflective of collectivity. Indeed, as one Pangasinenses we must work together, and move together in order to attain the vision of a progressive Pangasinan. Putting it in proper perspective, “walang maiiwan sa Pangasinan”.

Looking back in 2016 election, there was a famous political tagline by one political camp- “Pangasinan is NOT for sale.” That tagline was suggestive of being against vote buying since gubernatorial candidate Mark Cojuangco  at that time was perceived to be a millionaire with a lot of money to bankroll his candidacy. The said political tagline had worked wonders. The political camp won overwhelmingly against Cojuangco and his allies. Did what really happen in that election something to ponder on? That’s the reality of politics. (more…)

(more…)

ANG PANDAY BAYANIHAN: Brian Poe distributes relief goods

DAGUPAN CITY –  Brian Llamanzares Poe distributed bags of relief goods to residents of barangay Mangin who were victims of heavy flooding caused by several calamities, the latest of which was typhoon Ompong.

The relief goods were given by Ang Panday Bayanihan, a non-government organization headed by Llamanzares mother – Senator Grace Poe.

“The Ang Panday has been doing this – helping those who are in need especially during calamities,” Llamanzares said.

ANG PANDAY. Brian Poe Llamanzares speaks before residents of Mangin, Dagupan City, before he distributed packs of relief goods to the villagers who were victimized by flooding caused by typhoon Ompong. Llamanzares is the son of Senator Grace Poe who heads the Ang Panday foundation.

He was here on behalf of her mother who had a work at the Senate on September 24, the day of distribution.

He said while her mother topped the latest senatorial survey, she was still undecided whether to seek reelection in the 2019 polls.

While his mother “was happy” with the survey results,  her thoughts are still on her Senate work.

“Besides, she is still deciding whether she would still run. Nakakapagod din ang trabaho sa senador. Independent siya kaya mahirap,” he said.

If he could have his way, he preferred that his mother would continue working as senator, although he said public work is difficult and exhausting.

“Pero maganda naman ang work ng nanay ko at marami nang nagawa para sa bayan. So if mabigyan siya ng chance na mag serve ulit, sana matanggap siya ng mga tao,” he said.

“I told her, sana ituloy niya ang trabaho niya pero sa kanya pa rin ang desisyon,” he added.

The family is actually split about Poe’s running, he said, with his father Niel preferring that she won’t seek reelection anymore. His sisters have no interest in politics, he added.

“The family is stressed because she has not decided yet. Let us just wait for the filing in October,” he said.

If Senator Poe decides not to run, she would focus on the family’s business like the FPJ Productions which continues to release his grandfather Fernando Poe’s movies.

She would also focus on her charity works, he said.

Bryan said he did not think the Senator’s ambivalence would affect succeeding surveys, as the “surveys reflect her works in the Senate.”

He insisted that the distribution of relief goods to flood victims in barangay Manguin was not a campaign strategy  as the Panday Foundation has been existing for long and has been helping calamity victims

“But the network is wider now and it has more volunteers when my mother became senator,” he said.

ORTIGOZA: Helmet Ord was Indeed Stupid, I told you then

Columnists and radio commentators should not only have flair of writing and gift of gab, they should be perceptive where what they passionately write and bombard in the airwaves are buttressed by past knowledge and research.

Otherwise, they would be just like many of these present practitioners who pollute the media with their, my golly, all form but lacking the freakin’ substance journalistic somersault.

Here was a column and blog, full of common sense, I wrote in July 28, 2014:

“The Dagupan City Council led by its proponent Councilor Netu Tamayo, a lawyer, had passed an ordinance revising the helmet law by imposing a fine for motorist who drive motorcycle above 15 kilometers per hour (KPH) and/or wearing his helmet inside the central business district as a way to deter criminals riding in tandem in perpetuating their dastardly acts. Flip-flop on  reelection won’t affect Poe’s ranking – son

By Mortz C. Ortigoza

DAGUPAN CITY – The uncertainty of Senator Grace Poe to join or not the next year’s senatorial election will not affect her being No.1 in the polls, her son said.

Brian Poe Llamanzares said her mother’s being the consistent front runner in the surveys done by Pulse Asia, Social Weather Stations, and others only reflected her tireless proactive works in the Senate.

“Ah, sa tingin namin sana naman hindi. Iyong survey sana iyan ang reflection tingin ng tao sa trabaho niya. So kung maganda pa rin ang trabaho niya sa senado sana maging No. 1 pa rin siya,”Llamanzares, an alumnus of Columbia University, said. (more…)
