Mon-Mon Guico declares congressional run

By Mortz C. Ortigoza

DAGUPAN CITY – “It’s your time to shine.”

This was what former President and present Speaker Gloria M. Arroyo told her nephew Ramon ‘Mon-Mon” Guico III, the mayor of Binalonan, Pangasinan, when he told her  his plan to run for congress next year.

Guico said one of the factors that influenced him to run for Congress was the lack of leadership to spur the economy of the fifth congressional district of Pangasinan.

Guico Espino

BATTLE ROYALE.  Binalonan Mayor Ramon “Mon-Mon” V. Guico III (left) just declared his intention to challenge political heavyweight Pangasinan incumbent Fifth Congressional District Representative Amado T. Espino  Jr. The young Guico’s family is into aeronautical industry while Espino is retired police official who became governor for nine years.

“The District has a lot of potential as it is the fastest growing district of the province. It has four exits of the TPLEX (Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Express Way) like those at Urdaneta City, Binalonan, Pozurrobio, and Sison. It is one stretch that could be a linchpin for progress,” he stressed. (more…)

Sinag files graft raps vs NFA officials

By Virgilio Sar. Maganes

ROSALES- The Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (Sinag) filed a  complaint  against the National Food Authority for using the agency’s P5.1 billion fund intended for the stabilization price and supply of rice and corn to pay it maturing loans.

“This showed not only blatant mismanagement of funds which placed the Philippines in unstable position where people suffer from continuing increase in the prices of rice and corn,” the Sinag, chaired by Rosendo So, said.

The P5.1 billion fund was provided under Republic Act No. 10924 and signed by President Duterte on December 22, 2016.

The Sinag filed the case at the Office of the Ombudsman on August 29 against the officials of the National Food Authority (NFA) for violating Section 3(e) of Republic Act No. 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act and Article 220 of the Revised Penal Code or technical malversation of public funds. MAGANES: The deafening silence of local politicians?

It seems that the forthcoming middle election in May 2019 is met with coldness by the local officials. Unlike in previous elections, a year before the filing of certificates of candidacy, local politicians were already busy consolidating their political forces and conducting caucuses in various towns and cities. This year, it is only 30 days remaining before the filing of the certificates of candidacy on October 1 to 5, and yet the political air is not permeated on who will likely run in the local positions particularly in Pangasinan.

Political observers and media practitioners in Pangasinan are wondering about this lackadaisical attitude of local politicians. What takes them so long to announce their political plans? Or, are they still waiting for the go-signal of their political parties? The political situation is still fluid as of this writing. We can only speculate on the probable local candidates. These speculations will remain as such until the politicians will directly announce on what positions they will run in the next election. (more…)

(more…)
