Male dominates female in barangay, SK polls

DAGUPAN CITY – It is still a male-dominated barangay elections in Pangasinan where , a total of 44,346 candidates are running for the positions of barangay chairman, barangay kagawad, SK chair and kagawad seats, in 1,346 villages.

Records of the Commission on Elections provincial office showed that male candidates are still dominant in the race for barangay chairmanship, with 2,765 or 86 percent,  male and 467 or a mere 14 percent,  female.

Women seemed also to have shied away in the race for barangay kagawad.  Of the 24,025 candidates for  kagawad seats, only 5006 are women which represent a measly 30 percent.  A total of 19,019 of kagawad-wannabes are male.

For the SK, the discrepancy between is not as much as in the race for the barangay seats, although men are still ahead in numbers.

For SK chair, 3,201 are male or 62 percent of the 1,978 who filed certificates of candidacy.  There are 1,223 female candidates, or 38 percent.

For SK kagawad, 13,888 candidates filed for seven  seats in each of the 1,346 villages. Of them, 7,777 are male and 6,111 are females.

Provincial Election Officer Marino Salas said the number of female candidates fell below the expectations of the Commission on Elections, which encouraged women to run in the elections.

The Comelec held conferences on women empowerment, gender and development and women in politics last year, among women barangay officials.

It was to persuade more women to run in the elections, but still, its still a male-dominated industry, he said.

The turn-out of candidates for SK kagawad is also low, he said, “probably because there is honorarium for SK kagawads.”

One of the incentives for SK kagawads is free tuition in college, but state universities and colleges already offer free eduction, Salas saidYOLANDA SOTELO

(more…)
