DAGUPAN CITY – The National Union of the Philippines asked the Pangasinan Prosecutor’s Office to act on the complaint against the suspect in the  failed attempt on the life of a local mediaman four months ago.

The victim, Virgilio Maganes, who survived the shooting on November 8 last year, writes a column and news reports for the local weekly Northern Watch and used to host a daily radio program at the dwPR in Dagupan City.

The NUJP – Pangasinan Chapter, said the Prosecutor’s recommendation would be the basis for the court to issue a warrant of arrest against the suspect who was “positively identified” by Maganes.

There were initially two suspects who have submitted their counter-affidavits on  December 6, 2016 after the Villasis Police Station has completed its investigation and submitted the results to the Prosecutor’s Office.

In their affidavits, neighbors Jonald Franza and Michael Prado both denied the allegations, saying they were both at home during the shooting incident.

The complaint was handled by Assistant Prosecutor Irene Espiritu who had already written and forwarded the resolution to the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office in Lingayen for approval. Espiritu however, only recommended Prado  for prosecution as Maganes was not able to establish Franza’s  identity.

” The delay might be caused by the long vacation period last December due to the Christmas season. I understand that. However, it is now March or almost four months after the incident. Anyway, I have faith in our justice system, so I have to wait,” Maganes told the NUJP.

Recall that on November 6, 2016,  Maganes was aboard a tricycle on his way to the highway in Villasis to get a  bus ride to Dagupan City for his radio program.

At about 5:40 in the morning, the tricycle he was riding in was tailed by motorcycle riding men in tandem and fired four shots from a cal. 45 gun. Three shots were fired at the back of the tricycle but did not hit Maganes. The last gunshot from the front hit the right side of his body.

According to Maganes, it must be because he played dead that the suspects fled. He hailed another tricycle to bring him to a hospital.

The police later found a placard bearing words ” Wag akong tularan, drug posher ako” inside the tricycle that he road.

The police denied his involvement in any drug activity.

Maganes is a member of the Municipal Advisory Council (MAC) of Villasis Police Office.
