Nutrition advocates give Christmas treat to women,kids in Bayambang

Bayambang – More tha 200 pregnant and lactating mothers and their children felt the joy of early Christmas as the National Nutrition Council in the Ilocos (NNC-1) and the Regional Organization of Nutrition Development Advocates 1 (RONDA 1) brought here the 2016 RONDA Civic Advocacy activities.
The event, which was conducted on December 2 and was packed with surprises, was highlighted through gift-giving, raffle, story-telling and kids’ play, medical and nutrition services, orientation on the first 1000 days of pregnancy, and livelihood demo on buro making.
The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters ng Pilipinas (KBP) – Pangasinan Chapter also initiated a forum and press conference.
NNC-1 Regional Nutrition Coordinator Ma. Eileen Blanco said that the municipality of Bayambang was chosen to be the beneficiary because it was identified as the poorest municipality in the region and fourth with highest rate of malnutrition nationwide.
For his part, Mayor Cezar T. Quiambao said that his administration is focusing on anti-poverty programs to address the primary problem in his town.
He also expressed his gratitude to the NNC for helping the town in coping with poverty and malnutrition through implementation of specific programs like the Early Childhood Care and Development.
He gladly announced that his town will be a recipient of ECCD program fund amounting to P5 million in 2017
“Starting December 5, we will be starting with our 120-day feeding program and we will be spending a total of P6 million specifically for this purpose, with an objective to eradicate malnutrition in the municipality and get Bayambang out from the list of malnourished children,” Quiambao said.
He also added that his administration will ensure that pregnant and would-be pregnant mothers as well as lactating moms will be taken cared of and shall regularly be checked by physicians once they get pregnant to keep babies in their wombs safe, in-line with the purpose of the First 1000 days program of the NNC.
Meanwhile, he also encouraged his constituents to keep themselves busy for improving their lives. He added that backyard gardening might be a good start for them to help alleviate their economic condition at the grassroots.  (PIA)
