Poblacion Oeste declared 10th drug free barangay in Dagupan
DAGUPAN CITY – Barangay Poblacion Oeste has joined the rank of drug-free barangays in the city, becoming the 10th village so-far declared as such by the Dagupan City Police Station (DCPS) under Chief of Police, Superintendent Neil O. Miro, in line with the Philippine National Police’s Oplan Double Barrel and President Rodrigo Duterte’s War on Drugs.
Mayor Belen T. Fernandez, chair of the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC), signed the declaration in a meeting on Nov. 16 at the city museum, witnessed by Supt. Miro and Poblacion Oeste Barangay Chairman Lolita Vallejos, in the presence of other members of the barangay council of Poblacion Oeste.
In his report to Mayor Belen T. Fernandez, Miro disclosed that Poblacion Oeste had at least 43 drug personalities in their list and all of them were either arrested or surrendered under Operation Tokhang.
“We are glad to report that Poblacion Oeste is now drug free and this is due to the effort exerted by the barangay council under the leadership of Punong Barangay Lolita Vallejos. They deserve our commendation for their cooperation,” said Miro.
The other barangay declared drug-free a day earlier was Barangay Lomboy, the second island barangay after Salapingao declared as drug-free under the PNP’s and the city’s Barangay Drug-Clearing Operation.
“We are going closer to the 80 percent ceiling which we hope to achieve at least before the year ends,” said Mayor Fernandez as she revealed that 30 percent of the 31 barangays in Dagupan have already been so far cleared of drugs.
Miro expressed confidence that the city and the PNP with the help of the barangay officials will be able to clear 99 percent of the city’s 31 barangays from illegal drugs by early next year.
“We continue to seek the help and cooperation of our barangay officials including our citizens until we have achieved our goal,” said Miro, saying the PNP will never stop conducting symposia and forums in the barangays and in doing activities like “Oplan Kulay” in Sitio Aling.
‘Oplan Kulay is a mural painting activity supported by students of University of Pangasinan Phinma, intended to renew the old image of Sitio Aling as a former drug den.
The city, on the other hand, already started its Sagip-User Rehabilitation and Empowerment Program to help surrenderers undergo drug-rehabilitation for free for them to earn the chance to start a new life. After their rehabilitation, the former drug dependents will be trained on livelihood projects for them to earn a living.
The other barangays which were earlier declared drug free were Mamaling, Tebeng, Salisay, Pogo Grande, Mangin, Salapingao, Barangay IV, and Bolosan. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
