DAGUPAN CITY–Six illegal drug surrenderers from barangays Pantal and Lucao were chosen initial beneficiaries of the city’s newly launched Sagip User Rehabilitation and Empowerment program (SURE).
Mayor Belen T. Fernandez and Dagupan City Police Station (DCPS) Chief of Police Police Superintendent Neil O. Miro met these surrenderers on November 10 at the city museum where they were briefed on how the program works for them.
SURE Focal Person Erjohn Pangilinan disclosed that the surrenderers will first be subjected to a drug test at Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) Treatment and Rehabilitation Center to assess whether they qualify as in- patients or outpatients.
“This is important so that we know what kind of treatment they need based on the degree of their exposure to illegal drugs so we could give them the most appropriate treatment during their rehabilitation period,” said Pangilinan.
He added that if the victims have fully recovered in their rehabilitation period, they will undergo values formation under the guidance of pious volunteers coming from the Catholic Church and the Seventh Day Adventist.
“Once they complete the rehabilitation process, the City Social Welfare and Development Office will provide them training on the different livelihood programs which the city has been implementing to help them get employment,” added Pangilinan.
On the other hand, Miro thanked the barangay officials who have been very cooperative in the government’s campaign against illegal drugs, especially in convincing other drug dependents who have not yet surrendered to the authorities to finally give up while the Philippine National Police is very aggressive in its campaign against illegal drugs.
Fernandez assured the surrenderers that their rehabilitation program is completely free with no cost at all on their part or their family.
“All that they have to do is bring themselves in and complete the rehabilitation program. We are giving them an opportunity to have a new life and a chance to live a better life,” said Fernandez.
As of press time, eight barangays were already declared drug free under the DCPS drug clearing program dubbed as “Oplan Linis Droga”. These barangays are Mamalingling, Salisay, Tebeng, Pogo Grande, Mangin, Salapingao, Barangay IV and Bolosan.
Miro commended the city government, especially Mayor Fernandez, for initiating the SURE program in support of the national government’s serious campaign versus illegal drugs. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO/Nov. 11, 2016)
