DAGUPAN CITY –  The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources will hold a two-day  national aquaculture summit where industry stakeholders in the country will gather to discuss status, trends, opportunities and challenges in the aquaculture sub-sector.
The summit,  in coordination with the Philippine Association of Fish Producers, Inc.,  will be held on July 7-8 at  the Leisure Coast Resort in Bonuan, this city. Some 500 aquaculture stakeholders are expected to attend the activity.
According to BFAR, the  Philippines  ranked  7th  among the  top  fish  producing  countries  in  the  world,   with aquaculture  production  sharing  1.16  percent  to  the  total  global  aquaculture  production.
Fish  farming  in  cages  in  coastal  waters  or  mariculture  is  currently  a  significant contributor  of  food,  source  of  income,  and  employment,  particularly  in  rural  areas.
The cultured marine life are  fish,  crustaceans and  molluscs.
But despite  the country’s contribution to the world, the  sector  is  confronted with various concerns such as the development of a self-contained aquaculture and market demand-responsive industry, and marketing compliment  for stakeholders such as hatcheries, processing and other support facilities.
“Further development  is  imperative to cope  up  with  the  contracting land-based  aquaculture  area  and increasing  demand  for  fish  food,” the BFAR said.
It added that the  expansion  of  farmed  species,  development  of appropriate food, and development of breeding and hatchery and climate change are equally important to pursue food production.
