DAGUPAN CITY – A shoo-in congressional candidate in Pangasinan will fight to protect congress if a presidential aspirant padlocks the August chamber.
“Ako, to be honest, hindi ako natatakot ipaglaban ko kung ano ang tama,” the 29-year old Christopher “Toff” de Venecia said.
Presidential bet Rodrigo Duterte recently threatened to clamp down congress if he would be charged with impeachment by his detractors in the August Body, a move that would create a constitutional crisis.
“I will be forced to declare a revolutionary government,”Duterte is quoted by the media.
De Venecia, the son of former Speaker Jose and Congresswoman Gina de Venecia, said the looming threat to democracy is not easy to play with.
“Pero kasi since that statement, we need a stand and so (I am) happy I’m with the silent majority which is growing and growing,” he said.
De Venecia playfully said in case Duterte succeed in closing Congress, “I have to go down in history as the congressman with the shortest term.”
De Venecia said those posts at social media about a certain candidate leading the pack weeks before the May 9 presidential election were misleading.

He said his experiences in the hustings that Duterte lead were the opposite.
“During my lugawan (congee) with our constituents, I asked them to raise their hands if who among them support Mar Roxas and overwhelmingly all of them support Mar and Leni (Robredo),” he told this paper.
He said if the voters in the four towns and a city’s 4th District had told him that they support another presidential and vice presidential bet, he already prepared himself to emphatically campaign for his presidential and vice presidential candidates just to convince his mother’s constituents that his bets are the best to govern the country.
“I can say talagang hindi ako naniniwala sa survey, experience ko dito was different what was on the ground.”
