DAGUPAN CITY – The City Health Office (CHO) has started conducting Dengue Awareness Program and Prevention under its program Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue (ABKD) combined with a cleanup drive, both aimed at preventing the spread of dengue and other mosquito-related diseases like the dreaded Zika virus.
With Dr. Wendy Bernardo as team leader, the city’s campaign against dengue has so far reached the barangays of Bonuan Gueset and Bonuan Boquig.
“We will continue to bring our zero dengue and cleanup drive campaign in the barangays to instill among our local folks the importance of the daily 4 o’clock habit which is  the best way to control the dengue carrier mosquito, the aedes aegypti,” said Mayor Belen T. Fernandez  who  enjoined everyone to stay alert against Zika virus.
Jerome C. Espeleta, point person for special cases detailed at the CHO, reported that the city has recorded 37 persons afflicted with the dengue virus last February while more than 50 cases were recorded last January.
Accordingly, Calmay has the most number of recorded cases of dengue with eight patients; Bonuan Binloc, 5; Bonuan Gueset, 5; Pantal, 4; Bonuan Boquig, 3; Carael, 3; Bacayao Norte, 2; Caranglaan, 2; Bacayao Sur, 1; Mamalingling, 1; Mayombo, 1; Herrero-Perez, 1; and Tapuac, 1.
Espeleta disclosed that aside from conducting information drive, the CHO is also doing fogging and misting operations to destroy mosquito eggs and larvae.
Marlon Quebral, chief Sanitation Division, said it is best to search and destroy every area or container where mosquitoes are most likely to lay their eggs as fogging will only drive the mosquitoes away.
Accordingly, an adult mosquito has a life span of only 20 to 30 days and a female mosquito is capable of laying more than 70 eggs after every blood meal. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
