MAGANES: Mark Cojuangco: ‘ Confidently a public servant with a heart’

vir maganes

The brouhaha brought about by the faux pas committed by the host-Steve Harvey of the Miss Universe 2015 Pageant held in Las Vegas, USA last December 20 (December 21 in the Philippines) has not yet subsided as of late.

The mix-up in announcing Miss Colombia as the new Miss Universe 2015 instead of Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach drew flak in the international community. It was an event where Miss Colombia was deeply embarrassed and humiliated as the crown on her head, a sash and a bouquet were slowly transferred to the rightful Miss Universe 2015- our very own Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

The admirable gesture of Harvey was when he apologized publicly for his mistake and owned the mistake. What a man! He has the gall of accepting that big mistake in front of millions of audience glued on their television sets, computers and laptops. It was a gesture that got the nod of the majority of the viewers particularly as  it ended the reign of a “wrong” Miss Universe 2015.

The latest pageant gave the Philippines the boost to be the land of “beautiful people”. Ms. Wurtzbach has ended the 42 years drought for a Miss Universe, the last was Margarita Moran in 1973 (Gloria Diaz was crowned Miss Universe in 1969). She’s now the reigning Miss Universe 2015 who has earned raves from the international community not only because of her beauty and intelligence but because of her humility and grace during the most difficult situation when she was announced as the true winner.

What made Wurtzbach as the new Miss Universe 2015? When there were only three contestants left- Miss Philippines, Miss Colombia and Miss USA who had to answer the question: ” Why will you be the Miss Universe 2015?”, both Miss USA and Miss Colombia answered referring to their personal attributes. Miss Philippines answered the question with fashion- first by telling that being a Miss Universe is both an honor and a responsibility, second that she has the responsibility to be the voice of the youth and will work on social issues like HIV in the Philippines and third for showing to the world or universe for being “confidently beautiful with a heart.” Undoubtedly, such great answer elicit the nods of the four judges according to Perez Hilton, a famous podcaster based in Miami, USA.

Filipinos as of now are still rejoicing on the honor brought by Ms. Wurtzbach to our country. She’s indeed a beauty to behold and an ambassadress of peace and goodwill in the entire the world. But since we are now facing an election in May 2016,who among our political candidates have that stature to say that they are ” confidently a public servant with a heart?”

It could not be denied that we are wanting of good leaders in our midst- leaders who could inspire us and work on our aspirations as Filipinos. Let’s focus in the province of Pangasinan where the “son” of the sitting Governor will be pitted against former 5th District Rep. Mark O. Cojuangco for the gubernatorial post. Of course both gubernatorial aspirants have their own strengths and weaknesses. (more…)

SM City Rosales makes four person happy

By Virgilio Sar. Maganes

ROSALES- Four beneficiaries of Santa Mail received goodies and gifts from SM City Rosales in a fitting ceremony last December 25 here held at the mall’s Atrium.

The beneficiaries-a housewife with four children who was abandoned by a husband, a septuagenarian “tupig” vendor, a “kasambahay” ( household help) and a grandfather who cook food for his grandchild. They were selected based on letters to Santa Claus by persons who requested them as their beneficiaries.

Janet Merlin Miranda,37, partially blind with four children, was abandoned by her husband. Instead of wallowing in despair, she concentrated on caring for her four children- she put up a “sari-sari” store but soon closed as the space was used to construct a house by the owner. She shifted to do laundry works for families.

The sacrifices for her children did not go unnoticed by Haidee Ramat, a social worker employed by the municipal government of Villasis. Sana ngayong pasko, siya naman ay sumaya.”( I hope that this Christmas season she will be given a reason to believe that every sacrifice will be repaid with goodness. I hope that she will receive things that her family could not buy and savor food that they have not tasted. I hope she will be happy this Christmas season.)

Janet received also a gift from an “anonymous” person who wished her well this Christmas season. She said in her letter for Janet to smile and continue to face the future with joy because of her children and be an inspiration to people around her.

Grechelle Bince-Nebres, a school teacher of Piaz National High School of Villasis and a resident of Lomboy village of the same town, has requested her “kasambahay” (household help) of four years to be Santa’s beneficiary.

Remedios O. Martin, 51, according to Nebres, is a big help to her family as she takes care of her two children from Monday to Friday and even on Saturdays and Sundays when she is occupied with school works and activities.

” She does not complain even with a small pay from us. I hope my request to Santa will be given to make her happy this Christmas season. This is a way to show how much my family appreciates and thank her,” Nebres said.

Another letter to Santa came from an eight -year old boy who selected his ” Lolo Ely” as a beneficiary.

John Paul A. Sison requested cook wares for his grandfather who according to him cooks his food daily. His wished was granted.

Lolo Ely could not contain his joy and happiness as he received his gifts telling that he was unaware that he will be a beneficiary.

“They have been egging me to be with them at SM City Rosales not minding of this big surprise in my life. Thank you for the gifts,” Lolo Ely said. (more…)

Parang No Bio, No Boto iyan ah!

DAGUPAN CITY – The residents of a subdivision in this city received  a creepy Christmas gift last Tuesday: The body of a notorious criminal with a written greeting around the body, compliments of a death squad.

ORTIGOZA: LP’s solons will desert Roxas after kickbacks

mortz-nw-colored3
A veteran politician and a successful contractor of government projects told me that those congressmen who did not only swear to high heaven their support to lethargic presidential wannabe Mar Roxas but even campaigned for him whenever he barnstorms in the provinces will desert him 45 days before the May 9, 2016 election.
Why? Because   the bidding of the projects awarded to the chosen and favourite contractors of these congressmen would be finished before that time as mandated by election law,” he told me.
As you know solons who are allied with the Aquino Administration move heaven and earth to look for hundreds of millions of pesos of projects at the Departments of Public Works & Highway, Social Welfare & Development, Education, Agrarian Reform, National Irrigation Administration, and others and then look for the intercession of Malacanang patrons like Roxas to funnel these to their districts.
With the projects budget already allocated at the Department of Budget & Management, their favourite contractors give them advance sum to be deducted from their kickbacks they call S.O.P from the 20 percent or more of say P100 million highway concreting projects so they can use the monies for their campaign.
But with Roxas’ pathetic poll performance, these congressmen would just use him for the meantime and run to their popular presidential bet after they get their S.O.P so they can maintain their racket in the next administration.
Who said pork barrel was already abolished?
                                                 Economy
Comparing the Ramos and Arroyo Administrations to the present Aquino Administration, which among them was the best in expanding the growth of our economy?
According to the December 7 Merrill Lynch’s report, President Benigno Aquino Jr. was responsible for the 6.5 percent spike of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in his last five years against President Gloria Arroyo’s 4.8 percent growth GDP in the nine years in office and President Fidel V. Ramos’ 3.1 percent hike under his six-year term.

EDITORIAL: Hindi diskwalipikado sa pagka-Pangulo si Grace Poe

 EDITORIAL

(more…)

Inspiring government communicators

By VENUS MAY H. SARMIENTO

DAGUPAN CITY- Twelve years after its organization, the Pangasinan Association of Government Information Officers (PAGIO),  remains true to its vision to work cohesively with the citizens  to promote government development programs in Pangasinan.

In 2003, in a bid to reach out to more agencies and more people,  PAGIO moved to include not only line agencies but also local government units and humanitarian organizations.
PAGIO serves as a forum to express and exchange  ideas,  seeking necessary assistance from the government, the private sector and national funding institutions,  adopt measures for the promotion of the welfare of members and encourage people’s participation in government programs in order to promote and stimulate appropriate action for the attainment of provincial  and national goals.
Its mission is also in line with President of the Republic’s  advocacy to reach out and get feedbacks from project beneficiaries and the general public as well.
In got its boost recently with the presence of Undersecretary Jose Mari  Oquinena, director- general of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), who inspired the communicators and swore-in the new  set of officers.

Oquinena underscored the need for information officers to sustain  unity for development.

“If communicators  can unite a nation, then the power would be unimaginable,” Oquinena said during the group’s general assembly at the Dagupan City Museum on Monday.

Government communicators, he said, must be inspired with their work so they, in turn, can inspire people.

A government information officer’s job is never easy. Their role has been set before the first day of their service. And that is simply, to provide a mechanism for the free flow of timely, accurate and relevant information to the people. The Right to Information, as everyone knows, is a basic right.
This is why this group continues to sustain its inter-agency linkages  because by working together, more people will be well-informed.

As a famous saying goes, “The power of one if fearless and focused is formidable, but the power of many, working together, is definitely much, much better.”  (VHS/PIA-1/Pangasinan)

DOLE-1 hurdles stage 2 ISO audit

“I will recommend the DOLE-RO 1 for ISO 9001:2008 certification,” were the magic words that sparked off rejoicing from both the management and staff of the Department of Labor and Employment-Regional Office 1 after passing the stage 2 ISO audit.
The statement from Margarita Pambid, the Certification International Philippines, Inc. (CIPI) audit team head who conducted the stage 2 audit is actually a declaration that the office’s quality management system (QMS) generally complies with the requirements of ISO 9001:2008.
Pambid and another auditor, Rene David, conducted the audit in the regional office and its entire six field offices on December 17 and 18, and on December 21 and 22 as part of its goal of obtaining an ISO 9001:2008 certification by the end of the year.
While the CIPI audit report showed three minor non-conformities and a few opportunities for improvement (OFIs), it, nonetheless, indicated that the QMS of the regional office and its entire six field offices generally complies with ISO 9001:2008 standards.
