DAGUPAN CITY – This city was recognized anew by the Regional Committee for the Welfare of the Children (RCWC) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) as the Most Child-Friendly City in Region 1 on the occasion of the 2015 Regional Children’s Month held at HoteLinda Suits in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur last November 27.

DSWD Regional Director  Marcelo Nicomedes J. Castillo, RCWC chair,   cited Dagupan City’s programs on creating awareness among children on disaster preparedness;  giving a child-friendly space for children in any evacuation area during calamities;  conducting yearly Children’s Congress; and in giving the children the opportunity to exercise their right to participate in running the government through the “Manlinkor a Kalangweran” program as among the main reasons why Dagupan was given the award anew.

In addition, Mayor Belen T. Fernandez launched the Anti-Bullying and Anti-Drugs hotlines with the support and participation of the Philippine National Police and the Department of Education to save and protect the children of Dagupan City.“I would like  to thank all our Dagupan City employees headed by their respective Department  heads, our  Chief of Police  P/Supt Christopher Abrahano and the entire members of Dagupan City Police Station, Schools Division Superintendent Froserfina  Bravo of DepEd and the DepEd family, all national government agencies and the council for the protection of children,” said Fernandez.

Fernandez assured that the city will continue to create awareness and develop the children through music, sports and education.

“Building the future for our children will always be a challenge for each Dagupeño,” Fernandez said.

Corollary to this, Mayor Fernandez will deliver her first State of the Children Address at West Central 1 Elementary School which will coincide with the school’s Elementary Week Celebration on December 7.

The program will focus on the rights of a child, anti-bullying and on how to take care of children’s health. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO/Dec. 3, 2015)
