MAGANES: Grace Poe unfazed by Duterte’s entry in the presidential race
Reluctant presidentiable Rodrigo Duterte has finally thrown his hat into the 2016 presidential race by substituting Martin Dino of Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino-Laban ng Bayan (PDP-LABAN) Party who earlier withdrew his certificate of candidacy (COC).
Did Duterte, who in many forums said he was not interested in the presidency, change his mind upon the prodding of his supporters?
It was a move that raised many questions especially when he said he decided to run because of the decision of the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) that declared Senator Grace Poe as a natural born Filipino citizen. His statement that Poe is an “American” and he doesn’t want her to rule the country drew criticisms on him. Here is a man who professed to be a lawyer and yet could not accept the decision of a constitutional body like the SET. How can he govern a country when he does not respect laws like what he’s doing in Davao City? His hard stance against criminals especially those involved in drugs and other illegal activities might be admirable, but are we Filipinos ready for his kind of leadership?
According to legal luminaries, his filing of COC for presidency will draw legal battles against him. While it was claimed that he substituted Dino, they said he could not because of loopholes in Dino’s CoC.
Dino filed his CoC as Mayor of Pasay City and was about to be declared by the Commission on Election (Comelec) as a nuisance candidate.
Can Duterte file a CoC when the last day of filing has already lapsed last October 16? Anyway, it’s up to Comelec to appreciate the legal actions related to this.
On the camp of Senator Grace Poe, her supporters are unfazed by Duterte’s entry into the presidential race. Poe herself welcomed his move to participate in the presidential race saying that Duterte’s actions in the past have already shown his moist eye on the presidency. It’s not new to speak of.
However, telling Poe as an ‘American” does not bode well for Duterte. He should have at least given credence to SET and a little respect to Poe who has already been serving as senator of the Philippines.
Poe leads in any social survey as the preferred president in 2016. Even President Benigno S. Aquino III knows very well that Poe’s popularity could not be matched by any “presidentiable” including his “anointed candidate” Mar Roxas II who is just tailing behind Vice President Jejomar Binay.
Undaunted by disqualification cases filed against her at the Comelec, Poe is still her usual cool self and continues promoting the development agenda she would pursue should she win as president in 2016.
Along with her running mate- vice presidentiable Francis “Chiz” Escudero and their 12 senatoriables, they are busy visiting provinces in the whole country to tell their advocacies to young people and students in colleges and universities. Poe knows where this country is going. She knows her political plans. She knows so well how to attack her political opponents. Diminutive as she is, Senator Poe is full of guts and integrity that her political opponents are trying to discredit and destroy.
Believe me, of the presidentiables aching for the highest position of the country in 2016, it is only Senator Poe who has the true platform of governance. Why bank on Roxas who is just in the shadow of PNoy’s “Daang Matuwid”, Binay, a self-proclaimed poor with strings of corruption cases and Duterte who is known of his out of the box style of leadership?
This country needs a breather from all the woes it suffered for many years. We need true leaders like Senator Grace Poe who has the compassion and heart to serve the Filipino people. Please be counted to support her.
