MAGANES: No dull moments with Chiz
The visit of Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero in Dagupan City last September 10 has proven once again how popular he is to the students of the schools he visited like Colegio de Dagupan and Pangasinan Merchant Marine Academy (PAMMA). Students mobbed him and took turns in having ” selfies” or “groupies” photos. Chiz gamely acceded to their requests.
If the students went agog with Chiz, the media practitioners in Pangasinan could not also contain their admiration for the young Senator. About 70 media men attended the press conference held at the Star Plaza Hotel where Chiz answered their questions -point black and straight forward.
Had it not been because of other activities Chiz had to attend to that afternoon before going back to Manila, he would have entertained more questions.
After the press conference, media men also took turns in having photos with him. Yolly Sotelo, this paper’s publisher and correspondent of Philippine Daily Inquirer, seemed to be charmed by Chiz that she kept on saying ” Ang gwapo mo sir!”. Susan Yadao of DWIZ and Nora Dominguez of NET25 took turns in having “selfies” with him while Eva Visperas of Philippine Star just contented herself to be in photo backgrounds. (She also had a photo taken with Chiz- Ed)
Chiz’s popularity among the youth and media practitioners in Pangasinan did not wane a bit. He is still the public servant who endeared himself to media men because of his ability to speak on many issues coupled with humor. Of course, the person who incessantly smiling with Chiz is no other than Abono Partylist Chair Rosendo So. It will be remembered that Engr. So was all supportive to Chiz that in 2009 he sponsored a “Sigla” concert thinking that he will be running for President in 2010. That plan did not push through, however, due to the turn of events that led Chiz to bolt out from the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) Party.
In the morning of September 10, I was lucky to have interviewed Chiz in my program “Ang Bagong Bayan Po(e)” over DZRD Sonshine Radio. We talked about many issues and topics, which gave me the chance to know more of his advocacies and political plans in 2016. Among those topics and his answers are briefly stated below:
On the statement of Senator Grace Poe to have and airport in central Pangasinan to spur further development like the coming in of investors and tourists:
” All provinces are aspiring to have airports like us in Sorsogon although we are near to Legaspi City where there’s an airport. Pangasinan is a big province so there is a need for an international airport to further develop its potentials. Airports will bring in more investors as well as tourists to spur the province’s economy.”
On the “underspending” of the Department of Agriculture (DA):
” DA was given a budget that is supposed to accelerate agricultural development in the country. I am wondering why they have not spent it judiciously to help our farmers and fishermen. There are enough funds for them to fast track the construction and maintenance of our irrigation facilities and farm to market roads. What made them underspend their given appropriation is incomprehensible.”
On the alleged favoritism of the national government in extending assistance to calamity-stricken provinces especially if the administrations do not belong to Liberal Party:
” Calamities are not selective. It will strike only everywhere. Our national government should immediately address the needs of calamity-stricken areas regardless of political party affiliations of the governors or mayors. It is the duty of the government to response to such call. At the end, our party affiliations should be “Pilipinas” and we are all “Filipinos”.”
On his political plan in 2016:
” Senator (Grace) Poe and I have open communications. She has yet to make up her mind and decide on her own if she will run as President in 2016, a Vice President or just remain as a senator. However, this is her time and opportunity to serve our people. As for me, I will ever be supportive to her plans in whatever capacity she will ask me to do.Let’s wait for her announcement that will be made soon.”
