EDITORIAL: Biglang kambiyo!

Macanlalay recalls a funny incident during weddings

By Mortz C. Ortigoza

CALASIAO – A day after the wedding, the groom wanted the marriage “revoked” because his new wife refused to let him attend the town’s fiesta celebration.

This was one of the funny incidents that the young mayor, who has officiated over countless weddings, recalled.
He told the husband that he could not do (revoke) the marriage. Besides, the wife was already pregnant.
Macanlalay would not cite the village here where the couples who quarrelled lived.
He said in his five years as mayor he solemnized marriage of more than 500 pairs.
“In the mass wedding alone in the mall and at the plaza there were already 500! Not to mention the weekly wedding I officiated in the town hall,” he said. (more…)

MAGANES: More on Espino’s media threats

vir maganes
The issues on the threats of Governor Amado T. Espino Jr. to media men have not subsided as of late. It is the favorite topics of politicians when they are in group, of media men, of barangay officials and other sectors who were disgusted of what Espino said over the radio stations last July 17.

Much that I want it personally to put an end of the issue, I was bombarded with calls and emails from relatives and friends who said they feared for my life as a radio commentator. Others opined that I should leave radio broadcasting and not even meddle in politics and live in peace. While I accept their deep concern over my personal safety, I could not in conscience leave the crusade I impressed upon me to help Pangasinan thru my factual commentaries. The threats are there. Unluckily, these came from a supposed most revered official of the province -the governor of Pangasinan.
At the back of my mind, there are many thoughts coming. Was Espino provided with right information by his media consultants and “paid broadcasters?” Did Espino fully grasp the issues being hurled against his administration? Why did he act without sobriety that is expected from a public official like him?

In fairness to him, he might not have been given the right advice from his circles of media consultants. He ranted information provided to him by his consultants.
This is not a war of personal attacks. If there is one person to be blamed on the backlash against Espino, it’s his broadcaster Celso Manuel aka Manny Celso who started the idea of “threats”.
If I were Governor Espino, I would not allow this Manuel to broadcast over the radios. Instead of building up the administration, he put it into a situation that is now the talk of the town. Issuing threats does not augur well for the Espino administration, it even opened the minds of Pangasinense on what kind of a leader he is.
Surprisingly, not one member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan has taken the threat issue. Are they deaf or could not muster courage to talk against the Governor? Board Member Nestor “Nicky Boy” Reyes of 2nd District was once a broadcaster himself but apparently has not commented on the issue. Will they just wait that something happen to some broadcasters? God forbid!
The issue at hand is a tug-of-war on whom to support as gubernatorial candidate in the 2016 elections. Pangasinan broadcasters, like any voter, are torn between two contending parties- former 5th District Rep. Mark O. Cojuangco and the governor’s namesake Amado I. Espino III, the incumbent President of the Liga Federation of Barangays in Pangasinan. (more…)

Palay, corn driers useful for farmers

RAINY DAY PROBLEM SOLVED

By Virgilio Sar. Maganes

ALCALA- When the rain was non-stop for two weeks and farmers have nowhere to sundry their newly harvested corn, the mechanical palay and corn drying facilities here and in Villasis became very useful.

At the height of the continuous rains, corn farmers who took their grains to the drying facility in Bersamin village had to queue as there were plenty of them needing the services of the facility.

But former Pangasinan fifth district Rep. Mark Cojuangco came to the rescue. He asked Villasis Mayor Libradita G. Abrenica through former Mayor Nonato Abrenica who is in charge of the facility, to open the town’s palay drying facility to accommodate corn farmers and traders.

The facility’s machine, which is for palay, was adjusted so it can dry corn of farmers and traders from from Pozorrubio, Sta. Barbara and other towns.

“We thought that our facility here will be used only for palay drying since we have small group of corn farmers, but the unexpected monsoon rains have made us realized that it will be operational to its fullest,” Abrenica said.

San Nicolas town conducts feeding program

By Virgilio Sar. Maganes

SAN NICOLAS- This agricultural town of the 6th District joined the celebration of Nutrition Month last July 24 held at the town’s public gymnasium.

Two schools divisions of the Department of Education (DepEd) participated in different activities like cook fest contest, slogan making, poster making, jingle presentation around the theme “Timbang Iwasto Sa Tamang Nutrisyon at Ehersisyo.”

The activity was led by Mayor Rebecca Mejica Saldivar who said proper nutrition especially for young children is very important to develop not only their physical being but also their mental faculties.

” Parents play an important role in providing proper nutrition to their children, which ranges from selection of proper food to eat and its preparation. We can’t afford to have unhealthy constituents who will become future leaders of the town,” Saldivar said.

She lauded the officials and teachers of the schools divisions of the town for spearheading the activities of the nutrition month celebration and urged them to make the event sustainable to inculcate the importance of proper nutrition to young children.

Villasis conducts blood letting activity

By Virgilio Sar. Maganes

VILLASIS- Just in time on the onset of rainy season when dengue becomes prevalent, the municipal government led by Mayor Libradita Go-Abrenica in coordination with Region I Medical Center (R1MC), conducted a blood letting activity last July 11 at the Municipal Health Office (MHO).

Mayor Abrenica said the activity is being conducted annually to support the blood bank of R1MC and to have a steady blood supply for patients needing blood transfusion, particularly the victims of dengue.

“I am thankful to the blood donors who heeded to my call to donate their blood that will be used to extend lives of patients. I hope more volunteer-donors will participate in our future activity such as this one,” she said.

Robert T. Fabro, a MHO medical technologist who spearheaded the Mobile Blood Donation Program of the town said the activity is done twice a year. He also thanked the voluntary blood donors.

Medical staff of R1MC conducted pre-screening of donors whose blood samples were tested for malaria, human-immuno virus (HIV), syphilis, hepatitis B and C.

Children encouraged to read through storytelling

By Virgilio Sar. Maganes

ROSALES- To commemorate the publication of Dr. Jose Rizal’s classic, “Ang Pagong at Ang Matsing”, the National Children’s Book Reading Day was celebrated at SM City Rosales last July 21 in coordination with the National Book Store.

The ” Book Reading Day”, held every 3rd Tuesday of July, is part of of SM Cares Program for Children, the National Book Development Board, Department of Education, Vibal Publishing House, and Calidad Humana.

It is an advocacy of promoting literacy and encouraging children to develop their love for reading at an early age.

During the book reading, Rey Bufi, the founder of the Storytelling Project (TSP), read two books entitled “Si Kaitlin at ang Game Machine” and “Bob da Blob,” both published by Vibal Publishing.

He read the books to the pupils of United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) of Balungao, incorporating dancing exercises during the storytelling activity to encourage pupils’ participation.

Mukhang busy as a bee ang mayor ng Rosales.

(more…)

Dagupan joins nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill

DAGUPAN CITY – At a given signal, school children from the West Central I Elementary School simultaneously went out of their classrooms and each one of them headed towards a designated evacuation area.

This was part of the nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill held on July 22 to prepare students and pupils of what they ought to do to save themselves when a big earthquake comes, similar to the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Dagupan and a large part of North and Central Luzon on July 16, 1990.

Guided by their teachers, the pupils queued to an open area in front of their school with books on top of their heads while medical teams from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) at the same time hurriedly responded to help the injured inside classrooms in a scene similar to an actual situation after a strong earthquake.

Members of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) also arrived to put off the fire from the Home Economics Building which was in flame right after the earthquake.

At the end of the drill, Mayor Belen T. Fernandez gave a short message where she encouraged the children to always keep in mind whatever they have learned during the drill. She went on to enjoin them to pray that no earthquake similar in magnitude to the July 16, 1990 earthquake would happen again.

She also reminded the teachers, who were provided by the city with disaster preparedness brochures, a flashlight and a cross whistle at the end of the drill, to have a presence of mind when disaster strikes to save the lives of their students.

The drill was spearheaded by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council headed by Fernandez, together with the Department of Education, Philippine National Police, Department of Interior and Local Government and Bureau of Fire Protection.

Two days earlier, Fernandez met with the different heads of schools and of the Department of Education as well as members of the Disaster Risk Reduction Committee where she asked them to put up their respective preparedness plan to be integrated into the city’s family preparedness program.

Fernandez said that family preparedness means knowing the threat that affects the city like floods, earthquake, storm surge and possibly tsunami.

“Time is of the essence and for me there is no such thing as 100% percent preparedness. In our city before tsunami hits us, we have already identified Privately Hosted Evacuation Centers with the help of volunteer engineers. These buildings can withstand a strong quake and a seven meter-high tsunami and therefore ideal to host evacuees. According to our PARMC, there are around 200 owners of these buildings who have already officially given their consent to be PHECs,” said Fernandez.

Fernandez said a citywide earthquake drill will be held on July 30 that will involve all schools. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
