MAGANES: Goodbye Rannie J. Manaois!

Rannie J is gone. I was surprised last May 9 that after my program “Gising Pangasinan” aired over Bombo Radyo Dagupan, a media colleague texted me that he has already departed this crazy world of ours. Rannie, although I was not that close to him because of his personal tirades against me in the past, will always be a person to be looked up to. He may not be the best professional broadcaster but he had a way to endear himself to his colleagues particularly in giving a line of thought on issues at hand.
I met him when I was still connected with the provincial government of Pangasinan in early 1990s when the province was under the helm of then Governor Aguedo F. Agbayani. I used to hear his broadcast over DWPR Radyo Asenso until he left the radio station and joined DZRD until it was taken over by Sonshine Radyo. He was a broadcaster known for his acerbic commentaries. His tandem with then broadcaster Nicky Boy Reyes, now board member of the 2nd District, mesmerized me no end. That tandem was entertaining and mind-boggling as well.
Rannie J as he’s popularly known in the broadcast industry, was not the typical broadcaster that one idolizes. He had his flaws and weaknesses. I always consider his commentaries as full of glib words until he was out of circulation in the broadcast media. Then I heard he was already working as a freelance videographer/commentator whose works found their way to the YouTube, a social media where videos are uploaded. He came out with his monthly magazine “ Pinoy Magasin” that later on just became a web blogsite.
In spite of his personal flaws, Manaois in his small ways, tried to reach out his hand. We became friends again especially when I learned that he joined the Guardians, an organization that was once led by Senator Gringo Honasan, to which I was also a member.
I usually met him at the sessions of Sangguniang Panlalawigan when I worked with Board Member Ranjit Ramos Shahani. When he needed an interview with Shahani, I saw to it that he will be given a time. Those days made us more of acquaintance than friends. We also met in press conferences called for by Governor Amado T. Espino Jr., Abono Partylist Chair Rosendo So and even former 5th District Rep. Mark O. Cojuangco.
For many years he was of the broadcast industry, until last February that he was already one of the broadcasters of Governor Espino in tandem with Celso Manuel in a block time program over Bombo Radyo Dagupan. It was a welcome move from Espino’s camp knowing Rannie as a broadcaster. At first, he and Manuel were dealing with issues against Cojuangco until they shifted their tirades against their fellow media men. That was more than hell hearing them because of below the belt tirades that earned ire from their fellow media men. What can we expect from the tandem? They both glorified themselves as black propagandist- not dwelling on issues but distorting them just to appease, not their listeners, but their benefactor.
Because of negative criticisms hurled against their colleagues in the media, I harbored a personal grudge against Manaois- that grudge, however, I just kept it to myself because I believe what they were or are doing was just part of their “paid work”.
It is now different. Upon hearing Rannie’s death the hate that was boiling in me has totally vanished. The hatred has turned into compassion and sympathy. Why was it too early for him to leave this world? What plan has God in stored for him in the life beyond?

To my colleagues in Pangasinan media, there may be misgivings Rannie J. have done to some of us, but this time it is our duty as Christians to forgive him. Let us console each other that with Rannie’s death, we still time to look for ourselves and think of a bigger life ahead to all of us.
Let’s join hands to extend our sympathies to those he loved and left behind.
