DAGUPAN CITY – At least 11 families from Amado-Tapuac here were displaced when their houses were razed to the ground by a fire that broke out 2:20 p.m. of May 4.
Fanned by strong wind the fire quickly burned the make-shift houses of the victims, all made of light materials.
The fire was put off at 3:15 p.m. due to the timely response made by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), PANDA and the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) which has its own firetruck.
CDRRMO’s ambulance and that of Philippine Red Cross were also deployed to respond to the medical needs of the victims while the Dagupan City Police Station (DCPS) and the Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) assisted in crowd control.
Authorities from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said an investigation is still underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, Mayor Belen T. Fernandez visited the fire victims in the early morning of May 7, a day after she observed her birthday. The fire victims are now temporarily occupying the barangay’s basketball court.
Fernandez asked City Social Welfare and Development Officer Leah L. Aquino to immediately attend to the needs of the victims and help them rebuild their houses at the soonest time possible before the rain season starts.
Fernandez promised the displaced families that the city will provide them immediately with galvanized iron sheets, bags of cement, hollow blocks and lumber for them to build their new houses.
In her meeting with the victims, the mayor learned that seven of them are lot owners while four of them are informal settlers in the area. She gave her personal financial assistance to them and before leaving, she treated the children of the fire victims each with glass of “taho”. (CIO)
