URDANETA CITY- Aside from his campaign slogan, ”Pagkain sa Bawat Mesa”, senatorial candidate Jack Enrile of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) said if elected to the Senate, he will be the “people’s vanguard” against commodity hoarders and those who overprice basic commodities and oil products.

“There should be strict price monitoring by the government. Overpricing of commodities hurts small consumers and this will be difficult for the poor to make ends meet,” Enrile told the audience at a mini-rally held at the Cultural and Sports Complex here last April 18.

He said prices of oil products should be computed transparently because even at the slightest increase of crude oil prices in the world market, local prices are skyrocketed, and when the prices of crude oil decrease in world market, there is minimal rollback of prices of petroleum products (gasoline, diesel, LPG) locally.

“Let’s also vigilant in monitoring the overpricing of basic commodities like meat, grains, canned goods, fruits and vegetables. I will not be tired saying that we must have enough and affordable food to our people because no Filipino must go hungry in his own country,” he said.

He further said the 6.6 growth rate as being boasted by the government is not at all felt by ordinary Filipinos.

“Let us ensure our food supply. Let’s create agricultural zones in every province by providing the necessary support systems to our farmers and fishermen. About 20 to 40 percent of our population still go hungry,” Enrile stressed.

He further said aside from spurring agricultural productivity, investments in industrial sector must be undertaken to create jobs and employment.

“Our people must be productive, whether they are in agricultural or industrial sector, in order for them to have competitive incomes to put enough food on their tables,” Enrile said.

Enrile is the son of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and currently a member in the House of Representatives representing the 1st District of Cagayan. He is a member of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).
