MAGANES: What politicians don’t want to hear

vir
As the election campaign draws near, politicians are raring to start their opening campaign salvos. They have started mounting their strategies, posting tarpaulin with their names and faces printed in bold letters and big photos. Most if not all candidates are doing rounds of villages’ visitations in the guise of caucuses and informal meetings. If these activities are not premature campaigning which the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has not defined properly, then there is something wrong with our electoral laws that need immediate reforms.

While our political candidates are busy with their forthcoming gimmickry in their political campaigns, much are desired from them, particularly on their kinds of platform of governance and development agenda. These are very important to the electorates as they serve as the barometers and yardsticks in selecting or electing our next leaders. I am wondering however that the political candidates we have are mostly not keen on establishing development agenda. The incumbents are projecting how good their administration are while their political nemesis on the other hand are trying to discredit all such accomplishments. The worst and grim campaign scenarios are when these politicians resort to extreme mudslinging and black or dirty political ploys. These dirty tactics are already creeping in. (more…)

By Venus May H. Sarmiento
VILLASIS – Top officials of the Commission on Election participated in an invitational shootfest on Thursday to signal the start of the implementation of the nationwide gun ban from January 13 to June 12.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes fired the ceremonial shot using a caliber .45 pistol for the 7th Division Commissioner Armando Velasco Cup held at the Villasis Practical and Defensive Shooters Association, Inc.(VPADSAI) firing range here.
Brillantes explained that the firing activity is the last Comelec shootfest in the country prior to the gun ban as he jokingly said “Uubusin na namin lahat ng bala, para simula sa Linggo, wala nang magpapaputok.” (We will consume all the bullets so that when Sunday comes, there will be no more firing) (more…)

Carabao City lowers garbage fees to draw clients

By Mortz C. Ortigoza
URDANETA CITY – To draw more clients, the mayor of this city lowered the tipping fee for its sanitary landfill.
He said the strategy is to draw more local government units in and out of the region to patronize it.
Mayor Amadeo Perez IV said he decreased the fee per ton of segregated rubbish from P2,200 to P900 so more towns and cities can avail of the land fill facilities located at Sitio Caegu, Barangay Catablan.
This city has yet to reach the projected annual income the landfill can generate to enable it to pay the P220 million loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines. (more…)
