TPLEX opens in June, cuts travel time by one hour

ROSALES – The Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX) up to Rosales, Pangasinan, is expected to be completed in May 2013 but may operate a month or two later, a project consultant said.
Engineer Johnson Villar, project engineer of the North Luzon Road Link Corporation, a consultant of the Department of Public Works and Highways, said some parts of the expressway in Tarlac are being asphalted but in Pangasinan side, these are mostly undergoing aggregate base course.
“But with the good weather condition, we are optimistic that the project would meet the May 2013 deadline,” he said in a telephone interview. (more…)

No fourth district mayors seen in Romero’s burial

MANGALDAN – A senior board member in Pangasinan said a former high official wondered why the mayors of the fourth district were conspicuously absent during the internment of this town former Mayor Herminio Romero in January 3.
Provincial Board Member Jeremy Agerico Rosario said former five-time Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. asked him at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church the whereabouts of the other mayors.
De Venecia used to represent the district which includes Mangaldan.
The “missing mayors” were Napoleon Sales of Manaoag, Irene Libunao of San Fabian, Robert de Vera of San Jacinto, and Benjamin S. Lim of Dagupan City. (more…)

New Sin Taxes don’t benefit Region 1- BIR

CALASIAO – The assistant regional director of the Bureau of Internal Revenue in Region-1 said the P33 billion tax hikes the government could collect this year from cigarette, beer and liquor would not benefit the tax goal given to the regional office.
Last year BIR-Region 1 has been given a tax target of more than seven billion pesos.
Lawyer Edgar Pagulayan explained that the P33 billion that would be generated by Republic Act No. 1035, an act restructuring the excise tax on alcohol and tobacco products, known as Sin Taxes. would all be siphoned by the large taxpayer division of the tax agency main office in Manila.
“It would only the large taxpayers that would benefit on the new spikes,” he stressed. (more…)
