Three congressional candidates withdraw, family members substitute

DAGUPAN CITY – Three congressional candidates in Pangasinan withdrew their certificates of candidacy with family members running in their stead.
In the fourth district, its Manang versus Manay once more, after Celia Lim, wife of Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin Lim, filed her candidacy on the afternoon December 21, the last day for filing substitute candidates for the May 2013 elections. The original candidate Mario Lim withdrew his candidacy earlier that day, citing health reasons. (more…)

Versoza relieved as Pangasinan top cop

DAGUPAN CITY –Sr. Superintendent Mariano Versoza Jr. has been relieved from his post as provincial police director by PNP Police Director Nicanor Bartolome .
Versoza, set to retire from police service in July next year, was assigned to Camp Crame.
Versoza’s relief was announced during a conference on Wednesday among provincial directors of the Ilocos Region to discuss the policies and programs of new PNP Police Director Alan Purisima. The relief was effective last December 18. (more…)

ORTIGOZA: Politicians arming themselves with AK-47

Before a mayor of Pangasinan went to Infanta recently to pay his last respects to the slain Mayor Ruperto Martinez, I went near his Starex van.

He showed me two Russian-made folding- type Kalashnikov AK-47s sprawled at the floor of his car.
“Why not use those M-15 A4 Carbine (baby M-16 Armalite used by U.S special forces in Afghanistan and Iraq) your family has been giving as gift to political friends, ” I asked him.
He just laughed. He told me AK-47 (that has a 100-round detachable box and drum style magazine) is much powerful than M–15. (more…)

Abono mulls case vs. Thai group

ROSALES – The Swine Development Council and the Abono Party-list may seek the help of the court as a last resort to revoke the tax benefits given to the Thailand agricultural giant Charoen Pokphand (CP) Foods.
SDC Director Rosendo So, also the chair of the Abono Party-list group, said the hog industry players will have to go to court if the tax benefits granted by the Board of Investments to CP is not rescinded by President Aquino.
The Congress earlier asked Aquino to nullify the tax benefits to the CP, saying these are disadvantageous to the local industry stakeholders. (more…)

Bolinao chosen for tsunami warning devise pilot-testing

LINGAYEN – Bolinao town has been chosen by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) as site of the pilot-testing launching of the province’s very first tsunami detection system.
Prior to December 13 launching held at Bolinao School of Fisheries (BSF) in Arnedo, Bolinao, DOST component agencies PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) and ASTI (Advance Science and Technology Institute) had installed the complete set of the system last September offshore in said town.
