MAGANES: My top six senatorial candidates

As the national campaign for senators draws near on February 12, 2013, I have personally picked up my top 6 favorites, based not necessarily on how they fare in surveys. I’ve chosen them because in most of their sorties in Pangasinan, I was lucky to have covered them and I was able to know them more- their advocacies, characters. I may not be that close to them but I found them the best senatorial candidates.

Senator Francis ” Chiz” Escudero tops my list. I used to cover his sorties in Pangasinan in 2009 when he was still eyeing the presidential post in the 2010 elections. Because of turn of events, his presidential plan did not push through. He concentrated on his legislative work in the Senate House and did his best as one of the fiscalizers of sensitive legislative issues. Chiz could mislead electorates by his youthful looks and charisma. He could be mistaken as a matinee idol or a fashion model. However, don’t be deceived by his good looks. Behind that persona is an intelligent young man who could face any veteran legislator in the Senate.

Second to Senator Chiz is my favorite former ABS-CBN broadcaster Senator Loren Legarda. Senator Loren is an epitome of a Filipina woman. She seems to be fragile but behind the looks, Loren exudes the ferociousness of Gabriela Silang, the strength of Teodora Alonzo and the heart of Josefa Llanes Escoda.

Senator Legarda’s last visit in Pangasinan was in September this year when she distributed corn seeds and fertilizers in Sta. Maria and Villasis. She provided funds in the amount of P3 million to the Corn Production Program of Abono Partylist. Loren exudes simplicity as well. She’s like an unadulterated wine- the more it ages the sweeter it becomes.

Of course my third in the list is Jack Enrile, the unassuming representative of Cagsyan Valley. Jack, as he wanted to be addressed , has agricultural development as his prime advocacy. He doesn’t want to be remembered as the son of his famous father Senator Juan Ponce Enrile He’s proud of his father particularly his achievements, but Jack wants to curve his personal name in politics.

EDITORIAL:Erin Tañada should be senator

”I was the only deputy speaker left to preside over the historic voting on the RH bill. The risk was too great to allow any of the deputies to find an excuse to delay the proceedings.” – Erin Tanada

The vote on the RH Bill became a defining moment for Rep. Erin Tañada.

Tañada held his fort so that the RH Bill will be voted upon.

This is the kind of leadership the House of Representatives needed.

Rep. Jack Enrile praised the leadership shown by Tañada in the House.

“I definitely would have voted for Erin Tañada to the Senate, had he pursued the fight,” Enrile said. (more…)
