ASINGAN- Former Senator Letecia Ramos Shahani wrote to President. Aquino that the Shahani family will always support the Liberal Party, despite Ranjit’s pronouncements that he will support Govenor Amado Espino Jr., the candidate of the National People’s Coalition in the May 2013 local polls.

The elder Shahani said in her letter dated October 21 to Aquino that “Ranjit, Chanda, Lila and I do not want our personal relations with you and your family to be affected nor do we want to break our ties with the Liberal Party.”
She said the ties of her family with the Liberal Party started when her father, Narciso Ramos, was a founding and staunch member of the Liberal Party way back in 1946 and in 2010 elections they supported Aquino and Roxas candidacy believing on their moral leadership.
“ My family, particularly Ranjit and I at the provincial level campaigned for the Liberal Party which won at the national level. As you know, Ranjit won a seat in the Provincial Board to represent the 6th District of Pangasinan and became the highest elected member of the Liberal Party to win an elective post. As such, Ranjit played an important role in building the Liberal Party at the grass root level,” Shahani said.
Shahani also told the President that the rivalry between Alaminos City Mayor Hernani Braganza and Ranjit, who are second cousins, has existed for several years now although both were on “consulting and friendly terms” during the period that the Liberal Party candidates were being decided upon.
She continued in her letter: “ It was a public knowledge that Ranjit aspired for the party nomination as Vice Governor, given his wide experience in provincial governance. However, the possible selection of General Lumibao (sic) as Braganza’s running mate was also accepted by Ranjit and our family as a possibility which we could not question.”
Shahani said she tried to access leaders of the Liberal Party last August to explain some of the nuances of political positions in such a “big and politically complex province like Pangasinan” but it was not possible to obtain an appointment.
But the situation changed from what was normal political situation although a painful one for Ranjit was when Braganza and his six men charged into their family home in Asingan last October, she said.
“Ranjit was all alone in our family house. Hernani used crude words against Ranjit and against our family, he even threatened Ranjit with physical harm,” Shahani said.
Ranjit, the elder Shahani said, that although he is not supporting the Braganza-Lomibao team does not mean that he is leaving the Liberal Party.
“ Our family is in full support of your administration, Mr. President, and will support the senatorial team you have chosen to help you implement your policies and programs until 2016. The political detour taken by Ranjit in Pangasinan is the result of a personal quarrel and should not be interpreted as a political decision,” Shahani said.
