‘Surprise’ candidates file CoCs

By Yolanda Sotelo
DAGUPAN CITY – Pangasinan’s political landscape took interesting twists and turns with “unexpected candidates appearing at the Commission on Elections’ provincial office at the last day of filing certificates of candidacies on October 5.

Former Press Secretary and incumbent Alaminos City Mayor Hernani Braganza arrived at past three o’clock with his “surprise” teammate former Police Director General Arturo Lomibao who was earlier to be reported as Liberal Party chair in the fourth district.
He was thrust into the position after Braganza’s supposed running mate, former Governor Victor Agbayani, “declined” offers for him to run as vice governor. Agbayani opted to be the Liberal Party’s provincial campaign manager.
Braganza is up against incumbent Governor Amado Espino Jr. while Lomibao will lug it out with Vice Governor Ferdinand Calimlim.
Espino and Lomibao were classmates at the Philipp

CORTEZ: Isolation is Dangerous

BOK NANI BRAGANZA, balik trabaho ka na naman sa Alaminos City hall. Ang sinasabi ng 18thLaw of Power ay ganito, ‘Do Not Build Fortresses to Protect Yourself – Isolation is Dangerous. The world is dangerous and enemies are everywhere – everyone has to protect themselves. A fortress seems the safest. But isolation exposes you to more dangers than it protects you from – it cuts you off from valuable information, it makes you conspicuous and an easy target. Better to circulate among people find allies, mingle. You are shielded from your enemies by the crowd.’ (more…)

MAGANES: Pangasinan’s Political Scenario

When this paper comes off the press, candidates for the May 13, 2013 polls have already filed their certificates of candidacy. Prior to their filing of candidacies, there are last ditch efforts for party alliances from national to the local levels. Some efforts went kaput albeit due to party differences and the political personalities involved. There are also bolting out from parties and even long allies have to shift party loyalties.
The way I see it, these party shake ups do not in anyway mar the electoral process but the electorates will be given more options to select the best candidates from among those who filed their candidacies. What I think that is even more hurting is that friendships that have long been molded among political allies are put into jeopardy. The alliances and friendships will be put to tests- and may result in enmity and hatred. These scenarios are not new to the electorates and even to the politicians themselves. (more…)

BSL underscores the importance of tourism development

By Virgilio Sar. Maganes
ROSALES- Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin S. Lim underscored the importance of developing tourist destinations as come-on for tourists to visit the province of Pangasinan.
Lim also the chair of Pangasinan Tourism Council, was the guest speaker during the celebration of World Tourism Week held at the Event Center of SM City here last September 24.
“There are three major requirements for tourism activities to entice tourists to come into our province. First, there should be accessibility. Road networks must be developed including transportation facilities. Second, memorable experiences. Tourists are interested in areas where they want to taste the food of the people particularly the exotic ones. Service providers like restaurants must come up with clean food that are of international standard. Third, there must be adventure. Tourists go to areas where they will experience adventures. We have to develop these adventure destinations,” Lim said. (more…)

ORTIGOZA: My Libel Case

In a press conference called by Liberal Party’s gubernatorial bet Hernani Braganza, incumbent mayor of Alaminos City, at the Star Plaza in Dagupan City, he discussed intelligently a lot of issues concerning the state of the province. But one of them that incessantly pestered my mind was his anecdote about Governor Amado T. Espino of Pangasinan.
When he sent his administrator retired Colonel Wilhmer Panabang to offer the city’s ortho-photo map so the province can efficiently monitor who pays and who did not pay the real property taxes without imposing taxes to the people, the governor told Panabang to tell Nani (Braganza’s nickname) that he was a “bakes (monkey)”.
