ROSALES – The chairman of the Abono Party-list group assailed the modus operandi of sellers of imported meat by dyeing it red to deceive customers that their products are fresh.
“It’s really a problem,” Engineer Rosendo So said.
He explained that after the frozen meat is extracted from the box, these unscrupulous vendors sell these as fresh by dyeing them red.
He said this is objectionable because it could endanger the health of consumers
So explained that Administrative Order 22 of the Department of Agriculture provides that all frozen meat should be kept inside a freezer.
AO 22 mandates the handling requirements of the retail-packing of frozen meat and meat products should be kept in sanitary containers made of approved materials preferably stainless steel or food grade plastic as it they are kept in a temperature not higher than 10 Celsius.
“Iba ang category pag frozen, nagpapalit ng structure kung diretso sa freezer kasi. Tapos pag na-unfrozen iyong mga particles niya maging iba. So iyon ang reason ng Department of Agriculture na hiniwalay iyong category ng frozen saka iyong fresh,’ Eng. So stressed.
He also said a town or city without an abattoir should be strictly monitored.
So said some animals are slaughtered at 11 pm but the meat are sold the following morning.
So said A.O 5 provides that locally slaughtered meat should be sold within eight hours only after the swine is slaughtered.
“D.A observes that slaughtering starts at four am for the meat to be sold until 12 noon”, he said.
