McAdore edict regular, sale to go on – BSL

DAGUPAN CITY – Mayor Benjamin S. Lim has expressed the view that there was nothing irregular or anomalous in the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) resolution authorizing him to initiate the sale of the McAdore lot and building together with the other city-owned land located in barangay Talibaew, Calasiao.

“This being the case, my office will move on to sell the properties upon the creation of a disposal committee,” Lim told newsmen during a press briefing at the City Hall yesterday.

Asked about the special civil suit filed against him and nine Sangguniang Panlungsod members by SP Secretary Ryan Ravanzo before the local court questioning the validity of the resolution, Lim said that “the enactment of the measure is purely a legislative work.” (more…)

Lim lauds de Venecia, DPWH on planned road elevation

Rep. Gina de Venecia (4th District, Pangasinan)

By Mortz C. Ortigoza

DAGUPAN CITY –Mayor Benjamin Lim praised fourth district Rep. Gina de Venecia and District Engineer Rodolfo Dion of the Department of Public Works & Highway for their initiative to elevate by one meter the flood-prone AB Fernandez Avenue next year.

Lim said if elevated, flooding in the city’s main thoroughfare would be a thing of the past.

“Even if peripheries’ are flooded, motorists are still safe on the road,” he said.

He said he will ask soon the Sanggunian Panlungsod (city council) for an ordinance to hammer a building code which would require new edifices to have the ground floor higher than the one-meter roadway.

“We have to sacrifice. Our ground floor probably be converted into basement. Second floor will become our ground floor. Kaya nga we will decree very soon lahat ng bahay na ipapatayo, itataas niya lang ng ganito (gesturing a meter height).

He said the other plan of stakeholders before to avoid flooding here is to put dikes all over the river system here.

“Gagawa ka ng dike which is very expensive – ida-dike mo iyong buong Dagupan so that’s higher than the sea level, o itaas mo ang kalsada.”

Lim said the killer earthquake that obliterated this city proper in 1990, made DPWH to plan a one-meter elevated road but businessmen here vigorously opposed it. They reasoned out, Lim explained, that with one meter elevated roadway the stalls, septic tank, and others would be in a lower elevation. (more…)

ORTIGOZA: PNoy should heed FVR on arms purchase

Former President Fidel V. Ramos (FVR) agreed with me when I asked him that the Philippines needs to buttress its armed forces like buying T-50 Golden Eagle and F-16 Falcon supersonic jets from Korean Aerospace Industries and U.S based Lockheed Company.
But he told me there should be condition with them: The government should enter into a consortium with the manufacturers .
He cited what he did when he was a defense secretary and later as president when his Administration chalked –up with Alenia Aermacchihe, the Italian maker of S-211 turbofan powered military trainer jets, a co-partnership.
”The best way of acquiring modern equipment is what we did back in the 1990 with Cory (President Aquino) up to 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1994 during my time. It was not outright purchase; it is co-production and counter trade.”
“One squadron, 24 of them. But one half of them were paid in hard cash. The other were half were completed by bartering by ordering shoes, woven fashion wear, leather goods, and lingerie fashion materials made in the Philippines but Italy wants to brand them with their (products).”
He explained that the venture with military industries should be by co-production with Filipinos.
“If we talked about co-production it does not have to with flying the planes and jets. The non-avionics parts or the part that do not do have to do with flying the plane, firing the guns, providing the radar like the seats, the canopy, the upholstery, the glass. It must be made in the Philippines,” the former four-star generals (who can still do 1000 push ups in one setting) quipped.
“It gives employment at the same time with the people here”

Susmariosep, the president, a graduate of United States Military Academy, a four-star general and former defense secretary, talked sense when I met him during his road show tour of the book “Silver Linings” and the video show of “Taga-Pagligtas (Saviour)” (a documentary of the narrations of personnel of the PC’s Special Action Force) in Dagupan City recently. The Reponsible Parenthood Bill is an opportunity for the church and the government to serve the poor in terms of raising happy families.

The Responsible Parenthood Bill is more popularly called the Reproductive Health Bill or RH Bill.

Catholic Birshop Ramon Argulles gave a statue of the Virgin Mary to Pangasinan 5th District Rep. Kimi Cojuangco to influence her vote on the RH Bill.

Cojuangco said she would display her gift in her office “as a reminder of my resolve to help pass the RH bill so that Filipino women, just like the Virgin Mary, will be given a better chance for a better life.” (more…)

CORTEZ: Conrad Estrella goes to central Pangasinan towns

The US government is about to announce its $16 trillion debt, a landmark number that has more than tripled during the last two presidencies.
