DAGUPAN CITY– In response to the call of Mayor Benjamin S. Lim for a more serious and aggressive campaign against illegal drugs in their respective communities, Punong Barangay Pedro Gonzales of Barangay Bonuan Binloc showed the police the way to catch one of the most notorious drug dealers in his barangay last July 16.
In a buy-bust operation, City policemen led by Supt. Romeo Caramat Jr., in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Authority, caught red handed five individuals, including the main target, Hernando Clauna y Lapore Jr., who owns the house where the suspects were having a pot session when the raid was conducted.
Clauna’s place is just a few meters away from Gonzales’ residence.
The other four were identified by Caramat as Mark Torio y Martecho, 18, of Bliss Site, Bonuan Binloc; German Garcia y Aquino, 35, of Russia Street, Bonuan Binloc; Leonardo Nonog y Mendoza, 24, also of Bliss Site; and Michael Ariyaw Chua, 30, a businessman who is residing at Amado Street here.
The operation also resulted in the confiscation of 23 heat-sealed shabu granules with a market value of P10,000 pesos.
In less than a month after the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement last June 20Caramat disclosed that 18 more individuals were apprehended on similar operations which led to the confiscation of 5 grams of shabu granules worth P25 thousand pesos.
Gonzales vowed that more arrests will be conducted in the coming days to finally remove his barangay from the lists of drug-affected barangays in the city.
Clauna admitted that he was forced to push drugs to sustain his vice as he himself is using shabu, adding his clients come from as far as Manaoag, San Jacinto and Mangaldan.
Mayor Lim commended the efforts of Gonzales but challenged Caramat to catch the big fish or probably a number of big fishes.
“My challenge to our police officers is to catch the suppliers, because for all we know itong mga nahuhuli nila ay mga biktima din lang na nagtutulak na rin para masustentuhan yung kanilang bisyo,” said Lim.
He is, however, glad that the public is now more cooperative “because naniniwala sila na ang mga otoridad sa lungsod mula sa mayor ay talagang seryoso sa kampanya kontra sa droga.”
Saying “the drug problem is really alarming not only in our city but in the whole country as well,” he stressed that “when I say alarming, we are just scratching the surface in terms of giving solution to the problem.”
“We need to intensify our campaign. If there is a need for us to fund the operation of our PNP, we will do it including the operation of our Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (Badac). Hindi lang ang ating kapulisan ang dapat gumalaw dito, kailangan talaga sama-sama tayo sa laban na ito,” he pointed out. (CIO)
After 17 years, when it first hosted Palarong Pambansa in 1995 when the Governor was the PNP Provincial Director, the province’s second time hosting this year featured a lot of improvements and innovations to enhance the provincial government’s thrust in sports development and help realize the needed change in the landscape of Philippine sports in the near future, said Pangasinan Sports Coordinator Modesto Operania on a separate occasion.
