CALASIAO – Due to public clamor his office receives, this town’s mayor is bent to construct a temporary foot bridge after the Marusay Bridge was closed to pedestrians.

Mayor Mark Roy Macanlalay said he even plans to make a foot bridge made of bamboo so it could not inconvenience the people here who are burdened by additional fare by detouring to Barangay San Vicente here just to reach the main town and the nearby Dagupan City and vice versa.

“Actually may resolution na puweding gawin ang barangay, tapos may proposal na galing sa mga transport groups. Eventually bago totally isasara iyong tulay sa mga tao ay meron na silang dadaanan na footbridge,” he stressed.

He said he was told by the Department of Public Works & Highway that if the latter would construct light materials for a footbridge, the DPWH’s central office would not approve it because it would not pass the national standard.

Macanlalay said that materials made of bamboo would be cheaper than the almost one million of pesos worth of temporary bridge that some sector suggested to Rep. Rachel Arenas (3rd District, Pangasinan) and Engr. Marietta Mendoza, chief of the 2nd Sub-District Office of the DPWH, should construct.
A source from the DPWH who asked anonymity said the construction of the Marusay Bridge would be finished in March next year.

The construction of the Marusay comes from the P90 million Spanish government’s grant.
Another expert in the construction of public bridges said that the Mendoza could intercede for the foot bridge by asking the DPWH national office to use some of the saved funds in the program budget of the P90 million bridge for the construction of the foot bridge.
He said that the P90-million bridge is the result of the lowest winning bid. “There are savings that runs to million of pesos after the Marusay project was bided” he explained.
Mendoza in a previousTV interview said that the DPWH has not appropriated amount for the construction of the P90- million bridge.
