Urdaneta is richest city in Region -1

By Mortz c. Ortigoza

URDANETA CITY- The mayor of this premier city in Region 1 said despite the absence of tobacco excise tax, Urdaneta still remained No.1 in fiscal appropriation, partly because of the revenues from its university.

Urdaneta has an approved appropriation of P641 million for fiscal year 2012 compared to Dagupan City that has proposed budget of P P581 million which can be subject to some slash by city council.

Groups condemn illegal arrest of farmers

The Alyansa ng mga Magbubukid sa Gitnang Luson (AMGL, Farmers’ Alliance in Central Luzon) and Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) – Pangasinan condemned the illegal arrest of 3 farmer leaders in Bayambang, Pangasinan who are resisting the construction of concrete fences by Pangasinan governor Amado Espino at Barangay Bical Sur.

In a press statement, the groups said farmers belonging to the local organization Ulopan Na Umbaley Ed Camp Gregg Military Reservation (Farmers’ Union in Camp Gregg Military Reservation) have blocked the construction since last week as they asserted that the lands are part of the Camp Gregg Military Reservation under the supervision of the Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and should be distributed to the farmers who are cultivating them for decades.

“We condemn the violation of the rights of the farmers who are resisting land grabbing. Camp Gregg Military Reservation is a public land as the American government turned it over to the Bureau of Lands in 1949, and those private individuals who are claiming owning lands are not cleared by neither the DENR or Dept. of Agrarian Reform, thus, they are illegal claimants,” said Joseph Canlas, AMGL Chairperson. Pacgor gives P31M to Alaminos’ e-kawayan project

By Yolanda Sotelo

ALAMINOS CITY – This city’s engineered kawayan (e-kawayan) project received a boost with a P31 million grant from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor).

Mayor Hernani Braganza said last year, the Alaminos City government asked for funding from the Pagcor for the expansion of the processing facility of the Hundred Islands e-kawayan project, an innovative technology generated by the Mariano Marcos State University in Batac, Ilocos Norte.

E-kawayan technology is the manufacturing of bamboos into quality tables, chairs, desks, beds and other furniture, plaques, tiles and display materials. While these are common items made from bamboo, the city is producing products that are several notches better than those marketed at present.

“E-kawayan is a very simple and practical technology. With it, we can modernize the existing bamboo cottage industry. We are adding value in terms of improving not only aesthetically but the quality of furniture based on bamboos,” Mayor Hernani Braganza said.

He added that bamboo craft is an integral part of the economic life of western Pangasinan and the intention of the engineered-kawayan project is to modernize that particular cottage industry.

Pangasinan health office puts 39 people under surveillance for meningo

MALASIQUI – After a two- year old girl died of meningococcemia in barangay Bolaoit in this town, the Provincial Health Office put 39 people who had direct contact with the victim, under surveillance.

On account of the victim’s mother, the family hosted a party on January 1 attended by relatives and friends. That time, the child whose identity is not disclosed to the public, was already ill and feverish, the mother said.

Dr. Marlo De Guzman, municipal health officer, said the child was brought to the MHO on January 2 at about 9:30 in the morning.

“That time, the child had fever and had developed rashes so I immediately sent them to the Region I Medical Center where several tests were conducted,” De Guzman said.

The child died at the hospital in the morning of January 3.

De Guzman said results of the Cerebro Spinal Fluid (CSF) culture and blood culture of the patient, which he received on January 5, proved positive for Neisseria Meningitidis, the bacteria that causes meningococcemia.

Immediately after the results were known, the Provincial Health Office dispatched its surveillance team to monitor the people who came in close contact with the victim.

After a week, the people under surveillance did not register any sign or symptoms of the killer disease.

CORTEZ: Ang kaunlaran ay natatamasa

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PO KAY CONG. JOJO ESTRELLA! Naniniwala po ba kayo na marami nang pagbabagong naitayo ang President Benigno Aquino III?

Narito po ang kanyang speech noong New Year.

(more…)
