URDANETA CITY- The Sangguniang Panlungsod led by City Vice Mayor Onofre “ Bong” Gorospe approved the P641 million budget for 2012 as proposed by City Mayor Amadeo Gregorio “Bobom” E. Perez IV during their session before the Christmas holidays.

The approved budget is lower by P30 million compared to 2011 budgetary appropriations.

“The budgetary cut by 5.7% is due to the Supreme Court’s ruling which upheld the creation of 16 new cities in the country. This directly affected the share in the internal revenue allotment (IRA) of the existing chartered and component cities,” Gorospe said.

Gorospe further said that the SP is looking for ways to cover the lost revenues like increasing the city’s real property tax and intensifying collections from business establishments.

“We are devising ways in coordination wit Mayor Perez to increase our local revenues in order to cushion the IRA reduction in our budget in 2012. We will assure that the basic services to our city folk will not be affected,” he said.

In an earlier interview, Perez said the city government would implement belt-tightening measures to sustain the budget for 2012.

“We will be cutting the employment of emergency and casual employees, conserve electricity and gasoline expenses in order to cushion the impact of our budget cut in 2012,” Perez said.

He assured his constituents that there will be continuous implementation of projects particularly in the delivery of social and health services, agricultural production and school improvements.

“With the unity and cooperation of our city folk, I hope that we can move forward despite our meager resources,” he said.

Meanwhile, Perez also disclosed that the city would be hosting the Region I Athletic Association (R1AA), previously known as Ilocos Region Athletic Association (IRAA) in 2012.
