EDITORIAL: Youth not interested in education

A study said that 46.6 percent of out of school youth (OSY) lack personal interest in attending formal education.

It is surprising that even as basic education is deemed free and compulsory as ordered by the Free Public Secondary Education Act of 1988 and the Governance of Basic Education Act of 2001, a great number of the out of school youth are not interested.

This is because the cost of education is really high.

Although the government through the Departments of Social Welfare and Development implements the Conditional Cash Transfer Program, the youth still do not go to school.

The reason for not attending school is economic.

The economic reason takes into consideration the indirect costs related to school attendance like transportation and allowances for meals and school projects.

The pervasiveness of lack of interest towards earning a college degree must be addressed if not by the national government then by the provincial government.

We think that one of the factors that deter the youth from attending school is the prospect of landing jobs that give low wages.

The level of waes are exploitative.

Why spend 15 years of your life to get a diploma only to earn a minimum of 250 pesos a day inPangasinan (many earn 150 pesos a day!)?

While many say that education is a crucial factor for easier access to job opportunities and higher wages, experience says otherwise.

The provincial government needs to strengthen its subsidy program for education to those who cannot afford to attend school.

The 2012 School Year may still be months ahead but it will surely come and we need an educated generation to carry on the task of nation building.

Let us give the youth a reason to have an education.

We would like to see a Pangasinan of educated and happy people.
