18,000 kids join Dagupan Children’s Congress

DAGUPANCITY—About 18,000 schoolchildren here are expected to troop to the CSI Stadia in Barangay Lucao for the three-day 2nd Dagupan Children’s Congress and Fair which kicks off Monday.

The three-day Congress has a theme “Educational Awareness on Modern Technology Threats: Saving the kids. .. Strengthening the Families”.
Top officials of the government led by Science and Technology Secretary Mario Montejo, Secretary Antonio Villar Jr. chairman of the Dangerous Drugs Board and fourth district Rep Gina de Venecia will grace the opening ceremonies.
The celebration will be spiced up with the holding of the World Space Week to be held for the first time here under the auspices of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
The affair will be sponsored jointly by the Department of Education, DOST, City Supermarket Inc. and the Sangguniang Panlungsod chaired by Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez who is initiating the Congress for the second year in a row.
The theme of the Congress will be articulated lengthily during a tri-sectoral seminar among parents, teachers and children’s rights after the opening program to be moderated by DepEd.
Speakers will dwell on topics that seek to protect children from the harmful effects of internet games as well as in chatting with contacts that they do not even know in social networking sites.
The Congress includes fun games and contests that are strictly for the kids.
There will be Milo Taekwondo Camp, Animal Planet Face Painting, artwork and Story Telling, artwork competition, mini-fun day and games, Scan to go Speedstack, kiddie corner puzzle, glitter painting contest, 3 on 3 basketball, fruit salad making, speed stack tourney, salad and sandwich making, halo-halo making shot out contest, skateboarding and badminton tournament.
The vice mayor, chair of CSI, will preside in story telling in at least two sessions.
The launching of the “Celebrating World Space Week in Dagupan” will be held on October 4 to be presided over by DOST, which will feature Rocket Launching competition, the winner of which will go to Singapore with the trip to be sponsored by CSI with the help of the National Aeronautics Space Agency (NASA).
There will also be robotics exhibits, some of the robots to be put on display all the way from Japan.
