ROSALES-Farmers from different towns believe that it is the seed, not the soil, that determines the quality and quantity of palay harvest.

Romeo Lilagan of Rosales said that the seed production program of the government should be reviewed so that only certified seeds will be used by farmers.

Oftociano Manalo of Balungao said that government should also check the unethical practices of seed producers.

Another problem of seed producers is the length of payment by the Department of Agriculture.

Manalo said that some farmers have to wait up to three months before getting paid.

“Sana pagkadeliver nila ng seeds, mabayaran agad,” Manalo said.

Abono Party-list chairman Rosendo So said that he will reiterate this issues to Agriculture Secretary. Proceso Alcala.

The Abono Party-list will be undertaking a palay seed production program in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture and with farmers belonging to selected farmer irrigators associations on a pilot basis.

The objective is to promote the production of new certified seeds and these will be shared with other palay farmers.

Lilagan said that seed production can be an alternative source of income for farmers in relation to palay production.

He said there are farmers who are good at palay production but they may be better at seed production.
