Expert calls for installation of flood forecasting and warning gadgets

By Brando Cortez

DAGUPAN CITY-No amount of reassurance from the management of the San Roque Dam and its spillway controller will assuage the fear of the people for another round of flooding knowing that the instruments of PAG-ASA for flood forecasting and warning are not in place.

This fear was reiterated by Professor Nick Melecio, chair of the Pangasinan Institute for Land and Aquatic Research, after he visited Arthur Ladislao of the Agno River Flood Forecasting and Warning Office.

Melecio said that important papers and flood forecasting consoles that were supposed to be connected to telemetering devices in the mountains of the Cordilleras up to the town of Alcala were submerged and destroyed during the October flood of 2009 in Pangasinan.

Melecio also said that for the people to be better prepared and forewarned about the next flooding they must first be reassured that the repair or upgrade of all floodforecasting and warning instruments must be funded and installed.

Melecio said.

He also said that it seems that only Pangasinan 5th District Rep. Kimi Cojuangco among our elected government officials who is keeping watch over the flood problem.

Melecio said that with the leadership of Rep. Cojuangco we can create an upgraded protocol in the management water releases of the San Roque Dam

Trentang (30) pari para sa good governance

“We reiterate the position manifested by Archbishop Oscar Cruz that Jueteng has been tolerated by local government units and the police in Pangasinan to operate and thrive over the past decades. We stand by (his) claim that jueteng payola has corrupted the moral fiber of governance in our local governments…” STATEMENT SIGNED BY 30 PARISH PRIESTS

“We hope the SP members will be enlightened and retract their pronouncements against Archbishop Cruz and instead, promptly lend their individual and collective support for theradication of jueteng and other forms of illegal gambling in the province…” STATEMENT SIGNED BY 30 PARISH PRIESTS

Make your peace.

“Anyone who knows anything of history knows that great social changes are impossible without feminine upheaval. Social progress can be measured exactly by the social position of the fair sex, the ugly ones included.” – Karl Marx

Manay Gina de Venecia & Vivian Fernandez Torrijos: Mothers with a Mission

They come from two different countries and speak two different tongues, but when it comes to motherhood, their hearts beat as one. This is the pleasant discovery of Rep. Gina de Venecia and former First Lady of Panama Vivian Fernandez Torrijos, when they met in Panama, recently.
They have many things in common. Both have stable careers before they were plunged into politics. Manay Gina, mom of four, was into real estate and showbiz while Vivian was a publicist by profession and a mother of three. Both are also married to powerful men. Manay Gina’s husband Joe de Venecia is a five-time Speaker of the Philippine’s House of Representatives while Vivian’s husband, Martin Torrijos was Panama’s President from 2004 to 2009.
The two ladies however, managed to distinguish themselves not as mere partner to their husbands, but for their causes inspired by personal experiences as mothers.
Torrijos’ eldest has Down Syndrome, and she used that as her motivation to help children with disabilities in Panama. Her work was so successful that in 2008, the UNICEF presented her with a plaque in honor of her work with disabled children.
Manay Gina on one hand lost her youngest daughter in a fire, but instead of wallowing in bitterness, she used her love for KC as the inspiration in establishing the INA Foundation that helps grieving mothers. In 2006, she also built the first INA Healing Center in Batasan Hills, Quezon City that offers free psycho-social support to orphaned mothers.
In their conversation, the two explored many of their social programs that worked in their respective countries. “She talked about the things she did when she was First Lady while I discussed about The Haven for Women, The Haven for Children, The Haven for the Elderly, my daughter KC and INA Healing Center”, Manay Gina said.
The three The Havens are the projects of Manay Gina when she served as President of the Congressional Spouses Foundation, Inc. The Haven for Women with 15 regional centers rehabilitate abused women, The Haven for Children with four regional centers serve as half-way houses for streetchildren, while the recently opened The Haven for the Elderly in Tanay, Rizal is an idyllic sanctuary for senior citizens.
“I also told her about my LOVE program for the 4th District of Pangasinan”, she added. LOVE is the acronym of her legislative platform: livelihood, over-all health care, values formation and education and environment.
Mrs. Torrijos also said that she is being convinced by the people in Panama City to run for Mayor. And from someone who truly knows that politics can also be a noble calling, Manay Gina advised her to “Go for it.”
Among others, they pledged mutual support to each other’s programs. Their meeting also opened doors to joint future projects, in terms of promoting social reforms in their respective countries. Their parallel journeys as mothers with a mission have begun.
