STA. BARBARA– “Home for the homeless, land for the landless.”

These lines are not mere wishful thoughts but idealistic vision made real when four more housing units were awarded to four families last December 26 in Gawad Kalinga (GK) – Maticmatic through the joint effort of GK and this town.

“There is no better way of celebrating Christmas than sharing our blessings with our less fortunate townspeople,” Mayor Reynaldo V. Velasco said.

Velasco led the awarding of the four housing units and the feeding of malunggay noodles to children of the recipients after the ceremonies.

Aside the four housing units, the newly renovated Learning Center was also inaugurated. This building is being used as Sunday school classroom where values formation and feeding programs are being conducted through the effort of GK volunteer worker, Ms. Cecil Beltran- Labios.

The donors of the housing units include among others, the families of Mr. Adolfo Montemayor and Mr. Eding Vicente, both from Brgy. Banaoang, Sta. Barbara.

The recipients are Mr. & Mrs Orlando Paraan and family, Mr. & Mrs. Henry Morales and family, Mr. & Mrs. Joel Inacay and family and Mr. & Mrs Samuel dela Cruz and family. These families are among the 250 families residing in the resettlement area in Brgy. Maticmatic.

They were selected by a GK Screening Committee who required them to undergo values formation seminars as well as render 400 hours of labor as their equity.

Gawad Kalinga translated in English means “to give care.”

It is an alternative solution to the blatant problem of poverty not just in the Philippines but in the world. GK’s vision for the Philippines is a slum-free, squatter-free nation through a simple strategy of providing land for the landless, home for the homeless and food for the hungry. It is a means of providing dignity and peace for every Filipino.

The GK Program in Maticmatic was started by the Couples for Christ in collaboration with LGU-Sta. Barbara way back in 2002. A total of 20 units had been built in GK-Maticmatic in 2002.

Since the original units were made of hardiflex and other light materials, they are now dilapidated. Hence, through the leadership of Mayor Velasco, the housing units are being transformed into concrete houses with steel trusses.

After the blessings of the housing units by Rev. Fr. Fidelis B. Layog, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the construction of another housing unit. The donor of this unit to be constructed is the son of Mr. Rogelio Roy from Banaoang, Sta. Barbara, Mr. Ernesto Roy who is presently residing in the United States .
