URDANETA CITY- Mayor Amadeo R. Perez, Jr. debunked claims that the newly constructed city market is a “white elephant” because of unoccupied spaces in its second floor.

He said that what was aired over GMA 10-Balitang Amianan on December 21 projecting the market as unoccupied was a product of political scheme to discredit his many accomplishments in the city.

“While it is true that some portions or spaces on the second floor are still unoccupied by business-tenants, the economic activities of the new market is vibrant. In fact, out of its revenues we are able to pay the loan at the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP),” Mayor Perez said.

The construction of the new city market was the proceeds of loan amounting to P150 million from the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) in 2007 and payable within a 10- year period.

Perez further said that due to the economic crunch, many businesses have been affected. He added that the city government is looking for occupants, probably call center operators, to occupy the second floor occupied by 2010.

“There are in fact applicants for occupancy but they could not afford the current rental rates. We could not just lower the rental rates because they are covered by a city ordinance enacted by the Sangguniang Panlungsod,” he said.

He said that bright economic prospects are seen in the coming years. This, he said, augurs well for the complete market operations by 2010.
