VILLASIS- A retired police general and the present first lady of the town will clash for mayoralty here in May 2010 polls.

Libradita Go-Abrenica and retired police general Ismael R. Rafanan filed their certificates of candidacy (CoC) last November 28 at the Comelec Office here with supporters in tow.

Abrenica who is running under the Nationalist People’s Coalition-Biskeg na Pangasinan, has her Ladies Brigade of Villasis while Rafanan who is running under the Lakas-Kampi-CMD Coalition, was backed up by the officers and members of the Federation of Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association.

In earlier statements, Mayor Nonato S. Abrenica belied reports that his close friend Ismael Rafanan will throw his hat in the political ring.

Now that Rafanan has formally entered politics, he said that it is an exercise of democracy and that they will pursue a high level of political campaign.

“ My track record for nine years as mayor of the town, and that includes my wife, proved what kind of leadership we had in pursuing development progress in our town,” he said. He added that the townspeople will never forget the projects and programs he has spearheaded.

Abrenica is on his last term as the local chief executive of the town and hopes for a successor in his wife Libradita.

He said that he is requesting the townspeople to give his wife a chance for three more years to complete the development programs he has initiated.

Among the programs and projects in pipelines, he said, are the housing project for the homeless victims of the flood which will be built in coordination with Gawad Kalinga, improvement of the municipal cemetery and the development of the controlled dumpsite in Capulaan village for proper waste management.

Before filing his COC, Rafanan said before his supporters that Mayor Abrenica could be credited for the development of the urban center of the town. However, the barangays need to be developed further. He said that he will work on them if he will be victorious in his candidacy.

He further said that he did not give any commitment to the Abrenicas whether he will run as mayor or not.

“It was a long process of deep thinking. When many of our town mates came to me requesting me to run for mayor , I gave it a second thought. I was supposed to retire in my farm in Lepanto (but) I could not run away from the call of service,” he said.

He said that there were two concerns that prodded him to run- the issue of dynasty and the unstable peace and order of the town.

Abrenica will have incumbent Vice Mayor Centenielo Rizal R. Costales as running mate. Councilor and lawyer Judith Moulic-Morden is Rafanan’ vice mayor.

Two other mayoral candidates filed also their candidacies here- Lawyer Isagani M. Rabe, a retired state prosecutor of Quezon City and a retired seaman Victoriano F. Ordoño. Rabe is an independent candidate while Ordoño will be running under the Alpha Omega 9K Party.

On the councilors’ race, it will be contested by the incumbent councilors, “come backing” councilors and neophytes in local politics.

The incumbents are: Ignacio “Sonny” Soriano, Cheryl J. Bascos-Sembrano, Paz Sison-Rafanan , Rolando B. Morden and Emma Ruth B. Lopez.

Former councilors hoping for a comeback are: Gilbert “Boyet” Obedoza, Emeliza B. Mones, Louie Q. Sison (former SK Federation President), Arvin B. Castro and former Vice Mayor Roderick Mina.

Throwing their hats for the first time in town’s politics are: Cheryll Z. Tan, Jimmy Boy O. Chan, Rosario L. Limos, Richie V. Cacapit, Mario Cesar M. Racadio, Isabelo C. Mina, Jr., Roger A. Ordoño and Dominador L. Bravo.

Villasinians wake up. Your taxes paid to the municipal government of Villasis is money that was spent wisely by the Mayor in rendering excellent services and infrastructures and that I think is the legacy of Mayor Nato. No graft and corruption in the name of public service. Nothing is free in this world… Everybody must do his share… If you want honest to goodness governance vote wisely and not be swayed by empty promises. Mayor Abrenica delivered his campaign promises and I believe the Wife is an excellent and educated choice… Have a nice day to ALL VILLASINIANS.
