DAGUPAN CITY — Pangasinan fourth district congressional candidate Gina de Venecia said President Arroyo’s decision to run for congress in Pampanga was the President’s prerogative.

“We’re going to be best friend forever,” De Venecia said of her former friend and her husband’s (former Speaker Jose de Venecia) former political ally.

She said she her husband expected Arroyo’s seeking the congressional seat in Pampanga because the news had been circulating before her announcement.

But she doubted if Arroyo will succeed in becoming speaker of the house if “that is her plan.”

“It will all depend on the next president. It is really the president who decides who becomes speaker of the house. And it will depend on how many congressman from her party will win,” she said.

But De Venecia added that congressmen usually changes party after elections.

“Party loyalty is rare these days. Congressmen usually seek membership of the administration party. If her party’s presidential candidate loses, it would be difficult for her to become speaker,” she explained.

For Mrs. De Venecia, entering the world of politics is not really something new and frightening.

Being the wife of a congressman for 20 years (speaker for 15 years) means she had the best of education in politics. “He was the best teacher I could ever have and I was his full time protégée,” Mrs. De Venecia said.

Known as Manay Gina, she filed her CoC for the position which her husband, on his third term as congressman of the Pangasinan fourth district, is vacating.

“He taught me how to deal with the people, how to address the needs of the constituents, he taught me even international politics. I have been molded to become a good politician,” she said.

Mrs. De Venecia, who has joined the Nationalist People’s Colation, said there was no need to afraid of politicians who “wheel and deal” as long as she sincerely deals with everyone.

“As long as you show sincerity, people will treat you sincerely, too. If you show them love, they will show you love. If you are true to them, they will be true to you,” she said.

She believed that to follow her husband’s footsteps was a “calling” and that she was duty-bound to follow that calling because people in the fourth district urged her to run.

The former Speaker will still play a vital role in the district, although in his private capacity, she said.

“It’s sort of ‘buy one, take one’ – they will have Manay Gina and Kuya Joe,” she said.

Mrs. De Venecia said she will continue her husband’s programs and projects, but will also pursue her own programs she calls “LOVE.”

She explains that LOVE stands for livelihood, overall health, values formation and education and environment.
