Gawat and free movies for the oldies

Photobucket The crowd and the traffic during the 4-day sale at SM proof that there is no such thing as “gawat.”

Gawat is that time of the year when farmers are supposedly without money and are awaiting the time for them to harvest their crop.

SM management and tenants were surprised at the turn over of people from Pangasinan, Tarlac and Nueva Ecija who came to take advantage of the low prices on different items on sale.

Tatang Henry Sy once said that he was building malls as one stops shops for people to go to even during times of economic difficulties.

Tatang’s contention is that, in a tropical country such as the Philippines , people can enjoy the airconditioning in the mall as they stroll, eat, watch a movie or just go window shopping.

The poor deserve to have a taste of shopping in a comfortable area compared to the public markets and bazaars.

We laud the initiative of the SM management and the local government unit of Rosales for providing free admission to movies for senior citizens of Rosales.

In this situation the Municipality of Rosales does not subsidize the movie viewing pleasure of the senior citizens unlike other cities in the national capital region who pay SM.

Maybe, other cities can make similar arrangements between their respective local governments and management of the other malls in their areas for the movie viewing pleasure of senior citizens.

Or to look at it the other way around, the management of malls should make the initiative to talk to their host municipalities or cities for the benefit of the senior citizens.

Gawat or no gawat senior citizens ought to enjoy the last years of their years.
