Barangay dads basketball tourney reels off

PhotobucketURDANETA CITY – The Pangasinan 5th District Barangay Kagawad Inter-Town Basketball Tournament 2009 reeled off at the Cultural Center and Sports Complex here on September 26 with a jam packed crowd coming from the towns of Alcala, Sto. Tomas, Bautista, Villasis, Urdaneta City, Laoac, Pozorrubio, Binalonan and Sison.

In a brief opening program, City Mayor Amadeo R. Perez Jr. welcomed the participating teams and the guests expressing his thanks for selecting the city as the host of the tournament’s opening.

5th District Rep. Mark O. Cojuangco extended his thanks to the municipal mayors of the participating towns for supporting the project which he said is part of his physical fitness and sports program for barangay officials in the district.

Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. who graced the event said that the provincial government has developed a sports program not only basketball but other sports events in order for the Pangasinenses to be competitive in regional and n, national and even international sports competitions.

“I hope that sports development will start in the 5th district. We have a gymnasium in Lingayen and it offers free dormitories for our players and athletes,” he said.

He further said that by December this year, the provincial government will be training provincial athletes on all sports events even as he lauded the Abono Party-list for co-sponsoring this kind of activity.

Before the start of the first game between Binalonan and Sison teams, the Muse of the Tournament was selected among the nine participating teams. The muse from Pozorrubio got the nods of the board of judges with the muses of Sison and Binalonan as 2nd and third placers, respectively.

The Muse of the Tournament received a cash prize of P10,000, the 2nd place P6,000 and the third place P4,000. All other muses received a consolation prize of P2,000 each.

The Abono Party List sponsored the cash prizes.

The Oath of Amateurism was officiated by Kagawad Cris Delena of Mabanogbog village here.

Amid cheers from their town mates, the game between Binalonan and Sison teams was exciting. The kagawad cagers from Binalonan proved their superiority at the hard court without letting the Sison cagers to overcome their scores from the first to the fourth quarters of the game.
Binalonan team ended the game victorious with a score of 61 against 42 of Sison team.
The winners in the inter-town tournament among barangay kagawads in the district has the following prizes: 1st prize- P40,000, 2nd prize-P30,000, 3rd prize- P20,000 and 4th prize-P10,000. Each losing team will receive an incentive of P10,000 aside from the refundable cash bond of P10,000.

The tournament is sponsored by Rep. Mark O. Cojuangco, Abono Party-list, Board Member Danilo Uy and the municipal mayors of the 5th district of Pangasinan.

Attending the opening of the tournament were: Mayors Antonio Abalos (Laoac), Amado Espino III (Bautista), Nonato Abrenica (Villasis), Manuel Collado (Alcala), Kimi Cojuangco (Sison), Emma Chan (Pozorrubio) and Vice Mayor Ramon Guico III (Binalonan). Others present were: Board Members Chu Carancho, Danilo Uy , Amadeo Espino (Provincial Liga ng Barangay President). Mapandan Mayor Ferdie Calimlim, former Board Member Saffe Villar, former Mayor Artemio Chan of Pozorrubio, Abono Party-list President Ponciano Onia, Jr. and businessman Rene So.

Meanwhile as an added attraction of the tournament, a pre-PBA season game between San Miguel Beermen and Barangay Ginebra was played courtesy of Sison Mayor Kimi Cojuangco.

PBA superstars in the likes of Olsen Racela and Danilo Idefonso, a native of the city, received rousing cheers from the crowd.

During the game, the cagers of the contending teams have a neck to neck scores during the first to the 3rd quarters with San Miguel Beermen dominating the hard court. Towards the end of the 4th quarter of the game, Barangay Ginebra dominated the hard court with their fast breaks and three-points flooring the scores of the Beemen.

The game ended with 88 for Barangay Ginebra and 82 for the Beermen.
