With the youth

ESPINO WITH FUTURE LEADERS. Students listen to Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. who injects humor in his speech during the leadership seminar at the Pangasinan State University in Lingayen last September 16. Anchored on the theme, “Students Leadership Training: An Avenue of Learning in Sustaining a Culture of Responsibility, Integrity and Excellence,” the governor advised the future leaders that when things get rough, they can always take refuge in the most basic things in life – basic concept of right and wrong, and the basic values of honesty, fairness, integrity, hard work, and respect for the rights and the welfare of others. Fil-Brit former teacher seeks Laoac mayoralty

PhotobucketBy Yolanda Z. Sotelo

LAOAC – A public school teacher from this town who made it big as a businessman in the United Kingdom, returned here to run for mayor in 2010 so he can help his town mates.

Benjamin Manluctao, 60, said he decided to consider entering public service to help his town.

“It seems progress is elusive to the town. There is widespread suffering among the people because of poverty. Even in some villages, there is no source of potable water,” he said.

In his desire to become mayor, Manluctao gave up his British nationality (he was a dual citizen of the United Kingdom and the Philippines) and has been staying in the country for several months.

PSU offers fishery classes in Bani

LINGAYEN — The local government of Bani “saved the day” for the fishery college of the Pangasinan State University when it gave scholarship support to Bani students who wanted to take up fishery courses.

PSU President Victoriano Estira said the university’s college of fishery in Binmaley lost its center of excellence designation when its enrollment dropped to 86 in 2008-2009 school year, way below the required minimum of 100.

But when the local government of Bani partnered this school year with the PSU for an extension class in the town and paid the school fees of students, about 40 enrolled in the fishery program.
